“I should protect you. I also have to control what I do.”

Then:
“Would you kick somebody if they were stealing my chair?”
“If I needed to stop them and there was no safer way, I would physically intervene.”
“That means yes.”
“It means situations matter.”
“You talk like Dad.”
Alaric, from the kitchen:
“I heard that.”
I later sent Cordelia a short message.
I am sorry I kicked you. I was trying to stop you from pushing Bram, but I wish I had used another physical intervention. My apology does not change what you did to him.
She replied:
I understand.
