Chapter 10

No police arrived.
Patricia was not arrested.
No final confrontation happened in the bedroom.
No one struck anyone.
The children remained physically safe on the live feed, pressed close to Rosa near the white bed, Martina’s stuffed rabbit clutched tightly in her small hands again.
The control room stayed dim and blue.
The wall of monitors flickered with silent proof.
Patricia still did not know Emiliano was inside the mansion.
She still believed he was flying over the Atlantic.
She still believed Rosa was only an employee she could intimidate out of the way.
Emiliano stood beside the console, both hands planted firmly on the edge.
His eyes moved across the feeds.
Rosa shielding Martina.
Rosa guiding Daniela behind her.
Rosa appearing again and again in older clips whenever Patricia’s polished voice turned cold.
His daughters had not been dramatic.
They had not been difficult.
They had not been refusing to “adjust.”
They had been frightened.
And when they thought their father would not believe them, Rosa had believed them.
That realization hurt more than Patricia’s betrayal.
Because Patricia had revealed who she was.
But Rosa had revealed who Emiliano had failed to be.
David stood behind him, radio in hand.
“All exits are sealed. Recordings are being preserved off-site.”
Emiliano nodded once.
His wedding ring glinted beneath the monitor light, a reminder of the woman he had lost and the daughters he had nearly failed.
On the largest screen, Patricia stepped toward Rosa again.
Rosa remained still, calm, protective.
Between Patricia and the girls.
Always between.
Emiliano’s voice came out low and controlled.
“Keep every camera live.”
He stared at the screen with devastating guilt and growing fury.
And at last, Emiliano Duarte understood the truth hiding inside his own mansion.

The woman he planned to marry had been terrorizing his daughters.
And the housekeeper he almost allowed her to dismiss had been protecting them all along.
