Chapter 9

Patricia advanced one more step.
Rosa did not retreat.
“Move,” Patricia said.
“No.”
“You are staff.”
“I know.”
“Then remember your place.”
Rosa’s voice stayed steady.
“My place is wherever Mr. Duarte’s daughters are safe.”
Martina began to cry softly.
Daniela held her tighter.
In the control room, Emiliano straightened.
The guilt was still there, but something stronger rose through it now.
Purpose.
He had missed enough.
He would not miss the next move.
David’s radio crackled once.
Security was positioned.
No police.
No dramatic entry.
No confrontation yet.
Just sealed exits and preserved truth.
Emiliano looked across the monitors.
Front gate.
Service hall.
Bedroom corridor.
Garage access.
Staff stairwell.
Every exit Patricia might use if she realized the mask had fallen.
“Seal every exit,” he said.
David lifted the radio.
“Lock down all exterior access. Quietly. No disturbance.”
Emiliano added, “Preserve every recording.”
David nodded and repeated it.
On the largest monitor, Patricia suddenly paused.
Maybe she sensed something.
Maybe the house changed around her.
Maybe power has a sound when it leaves a person.
She looked toward the bedroom door.
Rosa noticed.
So did Daniela.
Patricia forced a smile again, but it no longer fit her face.
Emiliano watched the woman he had almost married stand in his daughters’ room and realized she had never wanted to join his family.

She had wanted to replace it.
