Chapter 5

Patricia Lane had built her life on rooms believing her.

She dressed correctly.

Spoke softly.

Remembered donors’ names.

Knew which men wanted admiration and which women wanted reassurance.

To Emiliano’s friends, she seemed ideal.

A poised woman willing to help a grieving billionaire rebuild family structure.

That was the phrase she loved.

Family structure.

It sounded mature.

Healthy.

Necessary.

But to Patricia, structure meant hierarchy.

Emiliano first.

Herself beside him.

The girls below.

Staff beneath everyone.

Rosa at the bottom.

The problem was the children did not accept Patricia the way adults did.

Martina cried when Patricia tried to replace her mother’s bedtime song.

Daniela refused to call her “almost Mom.”

The girls still ran to Rosa when nightmares came.

Still placed drawings on their late mother’s photograph.

Still asked whether their father could promise nothing would change after the wedding.

Patricia had patience for donors.

Not children who reminded her she had not yet won.

So she began with small punishments.

No dessert for “rudeness.”

No rabbit during lessons.

No Rosa after bedtime.

No calling Dad for every feeling.

She framed each rule as growth.

Emiliano believed too many of them.

That was the guilt he would carry.

Now, live on camera, Patricia took one step toward Rosa.

Her voice lowered.

“You are making them defiant.”

Rosa’s shoulders squared.

“No. I am making sure they are not alone.”

Patricia’s eyes flashed.

On the monitor, Martina hid behind Daniela.

In the control room, Emiliano’s face changed.

He no longer looked shocked.

He looked like a man becoming dangerous through restraint.
