Chapter 4

In the control room, Emiliano watched earlier recordings load across the surrounding monitors.

David did not speak until spoken to.

He knew better.

A father seeing his failure on camera was not a man to interrupt.

The footage thumbnails showed days of patterns.

Patricia entering the children’s wing after tutors left.

Rosa stepping into doorways.

Martina crying silently while holding her rabbit.

Daniela standing between Patricia and her sister.

Patricia smiling in public rooms, then changing the moment doors closed.

No strikes.

No graphic violence.

No single dramatic image that would make strangers understand instantly.

That was what made it worse.

The intimidation lived in posture.

Distance.

Tone.

Objects taken away.

Doors closed.

Children cornered by an adult who knew how to stay just below the line people like Emiliano noticed.

“Why didn’t I see this?” he whispered.

David’s jaw tightened.

“Because someone made sure you saw only what she wanted you to see.”

Emiliano looked at him.

David did not soften the answer.

“She scheduled herself around your calls. She moved staff. She complained about Rosa to isolate her from the girls. And she asked repeatedly for access to camera blind spots.”

Emiliano closed his eyes.

He remembered approving renovations.

Remembered Patricia saying the children deserved “privacy from surveillance.”

Remembered thinking she sounded compassionate.

Now the request looked different.

Not privacy.

Cover.

On the main monitor, Patricia stood in the bedroom doorway, staring at Rosa.

“Step away,” she repeated.

Rosa did not.

Daniela’s hand tightened around Martina’s shoulder.

Emiliano’s wedding ring caught the blue monitor light as his fist closed.

He had planned to marry Patricia in six weeks.

He had almost given her legal place in his daughters’ lives.

The thought made him feel physically sick.
