Chapter 7

Patricia tried to remove Rosa through authority.

“You are dismissed for the evening,” she said.

Rosa stood near the bed.

“I am scheduled until ten.”

“I changed the schedule.”

“No one told me.”

“I am telling you now.”

Daniela whispered, “Rosa, don’t go.”

Patricia turned sharply.

“Daniela, enough.”

The girl flinched but did not move away from her sister.

Emiliano watched the flinch replay inside him before it even ended.

David’s radio remained silent in his hand, waiting for the order.

“Do we intervene?” he asked.

Emiliano did not answer immediately.

Everything in him wanted to run upstairs.

But the prompt truth—his own truth—was that he had to see enough.

Not for revenge.

For certainty.

For protection that could survive Patricia’s next lie.

“She cannot touch them,” he said.

“She has not,” David replied. “Rosa is blocking.”

“Have security ready outside the wing.”

“Yes, sir.”

On the monitor, Patricia looked at Rosa with a smile so cold Emiliano barely recognized the woman he had planned to marry.

“You think he will choose a maid over me?”

Rosa answered quietly.

“I think he will choose his daughters when he sees the truth.”

Patricia laughed.

“He sees what I tell him to see.”

The control room went silent.

Emiliano stared at her face on the monitor.

There it was.

Not implied.

Not hidden.

Her confidence.

Her belief that she controlled the version of reality that reached him.

David looked at Emiliano.

Emiliano did not blink.
