Chapter 10 - The First Face Elena SawDr. Keene completed Elena’s treatment while Daniel was transported under federal protection.

The remaining bandages came away.

Light stabbed through her eyes.

Shapes sharpened slowly.

The ceiling.

The IV stand.

The glass wall.

Vanessa standing near the door with an officer beside her.

Elena looked at her sister-in-law for the first time since the attack.

Vanessa’s face carried no triumph now. Only exhaustion, fear, and the first signs of understanding that her anger had been directed by someone else.

Elena did not offer comfort.

She turned toward Mr. Chen.

The attorney’s features came into focus.

A small cut crossed his right thumb.

She remembered feeling a hand place the recording pen beneath her fingers before Vanessa entered. The thumb had brushed her palm.

Mr. Chen claimed a nurse prepared the document.

“You were beside my bed before the sting,” Elena said.

“Yes.”

“You told me you remained behind the glass.”

“I entered briefly to position the evidence pen.”

“Why lie?”

“To prevent Vanessa’s attorney from arguing that I coached your responses.”

The lie had a practical explanation.

It remained a lie.

Elena examined the old recording of Miriam’s hospital room. Young Chen wore the same three-circle Orchid symbol later used by Daniel’s network.

Orchid had existed before Daniel.

“You did not join his network,” Elena said. “He inherited yours.”

Chen nodded.

After Miriam’s coercion, he built an informal group to preserve medical and legal evidence. Daniel formalized it decades later.

Chen had devoted his career to correcting the first crime.

He had also accumulated authority no court could easily review.

Daniel arrived inside a secured hospital bed.

His face was bruised, and a rigid collar supported his neck. He reached for Elena’s hand.

She did not take it immediately.

“You knew my sight might be used as a key.”

“Yes.”

“You planned to hide my recovery.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I believed anyone close to you might be compromised.”

“Did that include me?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“At first.”

Vanessa stood behind him.

“You allowed Malcolm to impersonate you.”

“I did not know he was sending messages.”

“You recorded private childhood memories in Orchid.”

“For identity verification.”

“He used them to control me.”

Daniel looked toward his sister.

“I am sorry.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Sorry is what powerful people say after the system works exactly as they designed it.”

Elena understood the sentence.

Daniel admitted creating the hidden trust that could make Chen permanent controller. He claimed the instruction applied only if Daniel, Elena, and Vanessa were proven dead—not merely incapacitated or disqualified.

Malcolm’s version had been altered.

“Who has the original?” Detective Brooks asked.

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

The security chief removed a sealed flash drive from his watch.

“I do.”

Elena saw the Orchid symbol glowing across it.

Marcus had carried the founder document throughout the entire sting.

“Why didn’t you reveal it?” she asked.

“Daniel instructed me to release it only after he spoke to you directly.”

“You obeyed a missing man over the woman being threatened in the next room.”

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.”

The drive opened.

Daniel’s original trust confirmed Chen’s temporary authority and protected Vanessa’s patent claim. It also identified the person authorized to control Iris if Daniel died.

Elena expected her own name.

The document named Marcus Reed.

The security chief was not merely an employee.

His mother had worked with Miriam Ward during the original optical research. Marcus inherited a concealed portion of the patent rights.

Malcolm had used his security access to move Daniel through the hospital.

Chen had used his legal authority to build the trap.

Marcus held the final technical key.

Every supposed protector had something to gain.

Then Priya discovered a hidden transfer from Orchid.

Six million dollars had been paid to Marcus three days before Daniel’s plane crash.

The payment description read:

FOUNDER REMOVAL AND SECURE CONFINEMENT.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Daniel looked at him in horror.

👉 Elena regained her sight and uncovered the original trust, but it identified Marcus as both a hidden heir and the man paid to remove Daniel.
