Chapter 22 - RACHEL DUNN’S BORROWED FACERachel Dunn asked the court to use her original photograph during trial.

The request surprised Elena.
For years, Rachel had studied Elena’s face until mirrors no longer showed the woman she had been.
Her original name was Rachel Marie Dunn.
Her original face belonged to a quiet nurse from Toledo whose younger sister died after Ward Meridian denied an experimental treatment.
Rachel believed the company had hidden favorable trial results to protect a competing patent.
She entered Elena’s home to gather evidence.
Daniel discovered her investigation.
Instead of reporting her, he recruited her as a security decoy.
The first changes were reversible.
Hair.
Dental work.
Posture training.
Voice coaching.
Then Daniel authorized facial procedures.
Rachel consented initially.
Later surgeries were performed after Orchid threatened to expose her earlier theft of medication records.
Victimization and ambition grew beside each other.
“When did you decide to replace Elena?” the prosecutor asked.
“When I understood Daniel had already built the legal path.”
“Did he ask you to marry Nathan?”
“No.”
“Did Nathan?”
“No.”
“Did you plan to appear after Elena’s death?”
“Yes.”
Rachel had sabotaged Nathan’s plane by altering fuel records. She expected the emergency capsule to preserve him while the public declared Daniel dead.
The staged death would activate the spouse-replacement protocol.
Then Elena survived the parking-ramp attack.
Rachel had arranged the vehicle that released the retinal compound but claimed she did not order the impact that forced Elena over the barrier.
The driver’s messages proved Rachel wrote:
The exposure must look accidental. If she refuses the tunnel, make the car stop permanently.
The driver struck Elena’s vehicle.
Rachel accepted the risk of death.
She later entered the hospital using Chen’s face, manipulated Vanessa through messages drawn from Daniel’s childhood archive, controlled Malcolm’s access, and tried to preserve herself as the only available wife.
Her defense emphasized Daniel’s recruitment and Orchid’s coercive surgery.
The prosecution accepted those harms.
Then showed Rachel had obtained independent money and false passports three years earlier.
She could have disappeared.
She remained because Elena’s identity offered billions and authority.
“Did you hate Elena?” the prosecutor asked.
“No.”
“Did you envy her?”
“Yes.”
“Did you believe becoming her would punish Ward Meridian?”
“At first.”
“And later?”
“I wanted the life.”
Rachel looked toward Elena.
“I told myself you had inherited everything without earning it.”
Elena answered only during her victim statement.
“Rachel’s face was altered by men who valued her usefulness. She later used my body, marriage, and blindness as materials for a life she wanted. Her suffering explains why the door existed. It does not explain why she pushed me through it.”
Rachel was convicted of attempted murder, aggravated assault, identity trafficking, medical fraud, conspiracy, aircraft sabotage, obstruction, and unlawful surveillance.
She was acquitted of attempting to kill Nathan in the plane because evidence showed she expected the capsule to function. The sabotage and reckless-endangerment convictions remained severe.
She received a life-equivalent sentence.
Her cooperation identifying surgeons reduced certain counts. Her central planning increased the term.
Rachel requested reconstructive treatment returning her closer to her original appearance.
Prison physicians and independent specialists approved medically appropriate procedures, not as punishment or symbolic restoration.
Some changes could not be reversed safely.
Rachel kept the face that resulted.
Her identity record displayed both historical appearance and current features without calling her Elena.
Years later, she wrote one letter to Elena.
It did not ask forgiveness.
I thought identity belonged to the person capable of operating it. I did not understand that your life remained yours even when systems recognized me.
Elena kept the letter inside the criminal file.
She did not answer.
Rachel’s trial exposed the driver who forced Elena’s car from the ramp.
He had entered witness protection under Orchid.
His current file was controlled by Detective Lena Brooks.

The detective had known his location during the hospital sting.
👉 Rachel was convicted for trying to become Elena, while Detective Brooks now had to explain why the man who attacked Elena’s car had remained hidden inside her own investigation.
