Daniel authorized six million dollars to establish secure housing, medical equipment, and protection for whistleblowers connected to Iris.
The payment entered Marcus’s company because Orchid could not contract openly.
“Why call it Founder Removal?” Elena asked.
“That is not the invoice I submitted.”
Priya found the original.
Founder Relocation and Secure Continuity.
Someone deleted one word and changed another.
A minor alteration turned protection into kidnapping.
Malcolm had access to the payment ledger.
So did Mr. Chen.
So did Daniel.
Marcus opened the security archive stored inside his watch.
It documented the night of the plane crash.
Daniel discovered fuel contamination during takeoff and ordered the pilot toward Lake Erie. Before impact, he entered an emergency capsule installed beneath the rear cabin.
Marcus’s team recovered him.
Daniel instructed Marcus to report no survivor until the sabotage source was identified.
“I wanted to tell Elena,” Marcus said.
Daniel answered from the bed.
“I forbade it.”
Elena looked at her husband.
“You made him watch me grieve.”
“I believed the person who ordered the crash could be inside our home.”
“Then you suspected me.”
“For eighteen hours.”
“And after eighteen hours?”
“I suspected the board.”
“You still did not call.”
Daniel had begun using disappearance as strategy.
Every day he remained hidden made returning more dangerous. Every secret required another.
Marcus moved him between Orchid locations while Detective Brooks gathered evidence.
Malcolm discovered one route and abducted Daniel from the research campus.
The security chief’s failures were serious.
The invoice did not prove he planned them.
A voice recording inside his watch revealed more.
Daniel said:
“If Elena’s sight is damaged, do not restore it publicly until the ledger is secure.”
Marcus replied:
“She may refuse.”
“Then do not tell her the option exists.”
Elena stared at both men.
Marcus had obeyed.
Daniel had ordered.
Dr. Keene later discovered the order and began preparing treatment independently, which was why Malcolm kidnapped him too.
“You decided whether I was allowed to see,” Elena said.
Daniel’s voice broke.
“I believed the company’s evidence would disappear.”
“You chose evidence over my consent.”
“Yes.”
No explanation changed the choice.
Detective Brooks moved to collect Marcus’s watch.
A remote command activated.
Every Orchid file began deleting.
Marcus tried to stop it.
“My access has been revoked.”
The command originated from Mr. Chen’s legal tablet.
Chen had surrendered the device earlier.
It remained sealed inside an evidence bag.
The screen was dark.
Yet his biometric certificate was authorizing the purge.
Chen demanded that the tablet be disconnected.
Priya removed the battery.
The deletion continued through an external system.
Someone had cloned his legal identity exactly as Malcolm had copied his face.
Or Chen had prepared an automatic safeguard.
Daniel looked at the disappearing files.
“Orchid destroys itself if the original founder returns.”
“Who is the original founder?” Elena asked.
Everyone assumed Miriam Ward.
Daniel shook his head.
“My mother created the optical patents. She did not create Orchid.”
The old recording from Miriam’s hospital contained another person outside the visible frame.
The footage was enhanced.
A woman stood behind young Mr. Chen.
She wore a physician’s coat and held the camera.
Elena recognized the face from Daniel’s family photographs.
Miriam Ward.
The blind woman in the bed was not Miriam.
She was her identical twin sister, Margaret.
The family had hidden the existence of two researchers with the same face.
One owned the patents publicly.
The other built Orchid in secret.
Margaret Ward had been declared dead thirty years earlier.
Her biometric certificate had just initiated the file purge.
