Chapter 9 - Miriam Ward’s BedMr. Chen asked that the complete historical recording be played.

Miriam Ward lay beneath heavy bandages after a laboratory explosion damaged her sight. Malcolm, then a junior corporate attorney, placed patent-transfer papers beside her.
A younger Gabriel Chen stood near the door.
Malcolm leaned over Miriam.
“Sign, and your children keep the family home.”
Chen stepped forward.
“That is enough.”
The recording ended before Miriam signed.
Chen explained that he had been a newly licensed attorney assigned to observe the transaction. When he realized coercion was occurring, he removed Miriam from the hospital and challenged the transfer.
He lost.
Daniel and Vanessa’s father used a friendly judge to enforce the documents. Miriam’s optical patents became the foundation of Ward Meridian.
Chen remained close to the family because Miriam asked him to protect her children.
“Did Daniel know?” Vanessa asked.
“He learned after your mother died.”
“Why did no one tell me?”
“Miriam believed anger would destroy you.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“So everyone protected me by leaving me ignorant while my brother inherited her stolen company.”
Daniel attempted to restore part of Miriam’s ownership through the hidden ledger. He removed Vanessa from the ordinary trust because the original patents would give her a separate claim once the ledger opened.
He feared combining both inheritances would expose her to the board.
Vanessa interpreted the removal as betrayal.
Malcolm exploited that resentment.
The encrypted messages pretending to be Daniel came from his office.
He convinced Vanessa that Elena caused the crash and intended to erase Miriam’s claim.
Then he provided the estate document and instructions for obtaining Elena’s signature.
“Did Malcolm tell you to use the syringe?” Elena asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“No.”
“What did he tell you?”
“To make you believe I would do anything.”
“You decided the rest.”
“Yes.”
The first honest answer arrived without excuse.
It did not repair Elena’s throat or remove the terror of the needle.
It clarified responsibility.
Priya reconstructed the original patent ownership.
Miriam Ward should have controlled fifty-one percent of the company.
After her death, that interest should have passed equally to Daniel and Vanessa.
Instead, Daniel’s father registered all shares under himself.
Daniel inherited them later without understanding the original fraud.
Once he discovered it, he began building the Iris Ledger to correct ownership while exposing the hospital network.
Elena’s recovered vision would authenticate Miriam’s original optical markings.
Vanessa possessed the blood-heir authorization.
Daniel possessed the founder key.
All three were needed.
Malcolm had engineered conflict because cooperation would destroy his control.
Marcus received a live location from Daniel’s wedding ring.
It activated beneath the abandoned children’s hospital.
Tactical officers returned to the chapel and opened a sealed elevator.
Daniel was found inside an underground treatment ward.
Alive.
Unconscious.
A ventilator assisted his breathing.
Malcolm stood beside him holding the original ledger case.
He did not resist when officers entered.
“I kept him alive,” he said.
“You kidnapped him,” Detective Brooks replied.
“I protected him from Chen.”
Mr. Chen looked toward the tactical feed.
Malcolm claimed the attorney had designed Iris not to restore Miriam’s estate but to eliminate every Ward heir.
If Vanessa committed violence, she forfeited.
If Elena remained blind for ninety days, she lost control.
If Daniel stayed medically incapacitated, the board could remove him.
Mr. Chen would become Orchid trustee over the entire company.
The attorney had motive to preserve every condition.
Chen denied it.
Malcolm opened the ledger case.
Inside was a signed instruction from Daniel:
If all three Ward claimants become disqualified, Gabriel Chen assumes permanent control.
Elena turned toward him.
“You said your authority lasted thirty days.”
“That is what my trust states.”
“Daniel’s instruction says permanent.”
“I have never seen it.”
The signature appeared genuine.
But the old hospital had already shown how easily documents could become weapons.
Daniel began waking.
His eyes opened slowly.
He looked toward the camera.
“Elena?”
She leaned toward the screen.
“I’m here.”
His next words silenced everyone.

“Do not let Chen see the ledger.”
👉 Daniel was found alive beneath the abandoned hospital, and his first warning accused the attorney who claimed to be protecting the family.
