He admitted Orchid was more than a reserve account.
Daniel created it after discovering that Ward Meridian’s board had used private hospitals to manipulate founders during succession disputes.
Patients were drugged.
Medical records were altered.
Family members were encouraged to fight over estates while investors acquired frozen shares.
Orchid recruited attorneys, security officers, doctors, and investigators who could preserve evidence when official systems were compromised.
“Were you Daniel’s second-in-command?” Elena asked.
“No.”
“Then why does the message point to you?”
“Because I designed the legal structure.”
Mr. Chen created an emergency trust that activated if Daniel died, Elena became incapacitated, Vanessa committed violence, and the board entered conflict.
All four conditions now existed.
The temporary controller would be the Orchid trustee.
Mr. Chen.
Vanessa laughed from across the suite.
“There it is.”
Chen’s face remained calm.
“I cannot sell the company or benefit personally.”
“You control every vote,” Elena said.
“For thirty days.”
“Long enough to move records, appoint officers, and decide who sees Daniel.”
“I did not move him.”
The trust made Mr. Chen the greatest legal beneficiary of the crisis even if he received no personal wealth.
Detective Brooks searched his communications.
A message from Malcolm appeared two hours before the sting.
The wife remains blind. The sister is ready. Activate your room.
Chen claimed he never received it.
The message had been opened from his account.
Marcus found the device used to access it.
A tablet hidden beneath the privacy-glass control desk.
Whoever placed it had sat inside the observation room before the board arrived.
Security footage showed Malcolm entering alone that afternoon.
He could have copied Chen’s credentials, arranged the seating, and left Daniel’s note to frame him.
Or Chen could have used Malcolm as cover.
Elena’s recovering vision remained blurred, but the Orchid symbols grew clearer.
She examined the legal document Vanessa had carried.
Fluorescent lines formed a second text beneath the visible transfer.
COERCION ACTIVATES FORFEITURE.
By threatening Elena, Vanessa had automatically surrendered any claim created by the document.
The estate would not pass to her even if Elena signed.
Mr. Chen knew.
“You let her believe the document worked,” Elena said.
“I needed her to state who instructed her.”
“She never named Malcolm.”
“She would have if the lights remained off longer.”
“You were willing to let her keep choking me.”
His silence confirmed it.
The detectives had been instructed to intervene only if Vanessa pierced the IV or Elena used the emergency word.
Elena had used Mr. Chen’s name instead.
He turned on the lights because he interpreted it as the signal.
“I misjudged the danger,” he said.
“You measured it.”
“Yes.”
“And decided my body could carry a little more.”
Chen lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Elena asked Detective Brooks to remove him from the room.
He placed his Orchid pin on the table before leaving.
“I will surrender trustee control whenever you request it.”
“Can I remove you?”
“Not until the original ledger recognizes your recovered sight.”
The trust itself prevented her from acting until the medical key was complete.
Daniel had given Elena ultimate authority while surrounding that authority with conditions she never approved.
Marcus located the underground tunnel’s destination.
It led from the research campus to Ward Meridian’s original headquarters, an abandoned children’s hospital scheduled for demolition.
Tactical officers entered.
The building contained no Daniel.
No Malcolm.
Only rows of old patient rooms and a functioning server center beneath the chapel.
The servers displayed live feeds from Elena’s private suite.
Someone had watched the sting from the abandoned hospital.
A screen showed Vanessa ripping out the IV.
Another showed the board behind the glass.
A third showed Mr. Chen’s hand above the light switch.
The camera angle revealed a figure standing behind him.
Elena enlarged the image.
Marcus recognized the face.
Detective Lena Brooks.
The detective had been inside the observation room before appearing in the hallway.
Her Orchid-marked folder was not evidence Daniel trusted her.
