Chapter 1 - Thirty-Six ShadowsNancy screamed whenever the pain tightened inside her stomach.

Samantha held her five-year-old daughter against her chest on the pediatric hospital bed, whispering that she was safe while rain hammered the windows of the San Diego examination room.
Nancy wore a purple hospital gown. Her small body curled inward, and her fingers clutched Samantha’s sweater with desperate strength.
Dr. Miles Hart entered carrying an abdominal X-ray.
Two police officers followed him.
The doctor placed the image beneath the examination light. Dozens of bright circles clustered inside Nancy’s abdomen like a broken chain.
“We found thirty-six high-powered magnets inside her abdomen.”
Samantha stared at him.
“Thirty-six?”
“When magnets are swallowed separately, they can attract through different sections of tissue. She needs emergency surgery.”
Samantha’s legs nearly failed.
Nancy had complained about stomachaches for several days. Brandon insisted she was seeking attention. Evelyn said Samantha encouraged weakness by rushing the child to doctors.
That afternoon, Nancy collapsed beside the dining-room table.
Samantha brought her to the hospital without calling either of them.
Now Brandon stormed through the doorway with Evelyn behind him.
He pointed viciously at Samantha.
“What did you do to our daughter?”
Evelyn covered her mouth and performed grief so dramatically that one of the officers watched her instead of Nancy.
Brandon reached for the child.
Samantha pulled Nancy closer.
“Do not touch her.”
“I’m her father.”
“You told me she was pretending.”
“I didn’t know you had filled her with metal.”
Dr. Hart placed himself between them.
“No one is taking the patient anywhere. Surgery is being prepared.”
Samantha forced herself to focus.
“Could she have swallowed all of them alone?”
The doctor pointed to the X-ray.
The magnets did not form one loose cluster. They appeared in several connected groups, indicating they had entered Nancy’s body at different times.
“Someone most likely gave them to her one by one.”
Evelyn’s face drained.
It lasted less than a second.
Then she turned toward Samantha.
“You were alone with her every morning.”
Samantha saw the fear Evelyn tried to bury.
She remembered the dining-room camera.
Months earlier, food disappeared from Nancy’s plate whenever Evelyn babysat. Brandon claimed the child was lying about being forced to finish adult supplements. Samantha installed a small camera above the dining-room bookshelf and connected it to a security application.
She opened the app.
“Check the dining-room camera before anyone leaves.”
Brandon lunged for the phone.
Officer Elena Ruiz blocked him and transferred the archived recording onto a police evidence tablet.
The video began playing.
The date was three evenings earlier.
Evelyn sat beside Nancy at the dining table. A decorative candy bowl rested between them.
Evelyn removed a tiny silver object and placed it in Nancy’s palm.
Nancy shook her head.
Evelyn pointed toward the child’s mouth.
Another object followed.
Then another.
Brandon froze.
Evelyn stumbled backward.
“That is not what it looks like.”
Nancy stared at her grandmother through frightened eyes.
Samantha gripped her daughter.
“What did she tell you those were?”
Nancy whispered, “Magic stars.”
“Who gave them to Grandma?”
Nancy looked toward Brandon.
“Daddy.”
The room became silent.
Dr. Hart turned to the officers.
“Surgery cannot wait. Preserve that recording and the X-ray.”
As nurses prepared Nancy for the operating room, Elena paused the footage on Evelyn’s hand.
The bright object between her fingers had the unmistakable circular shape of a magnet.
But another detail appeared in the corner of the recording.
Brandon stood outside the dining-room doorway.
He had watched Evelyn give the objects to Nancy.

And instead of stopping her, he raised his phone and began recording.
👉 The dining-room camera exposed Evelyn’s hand—but Brandon’s hidden recording suggested the child’s poisoning had been planned by both of them.
