Chapter 11 - The Brother in the BasementDaniel denied entering the foundation hospital.

He remained on the phone with Elena while the camera timestamp showed the man descending into the server room.
“Someone is using my face,” he said.
Evelyn stared at the footage.
“You and Brandon looked almost identical at that age.”
The man wore a surgical mask below his nose. Facial identification could have confused the brothers.
The badge belonged to Brandon.
Police entered the lower level.
The fire alarm was false.
Smoke machines had been activated to force evacuation.
The server racks were intact, but several drives had been removed.
A bloodstain marked the floor.
No injured person remained.
Security footage showed the masked man leaving through a staff tunnel carrying a black medical case.
He moved with a limp.
Daniel had walked with a limp since adolescence.
Brandon did not.
Samantha asked the question no one wanted to say.
“What if Daniel is protecting himself, not Nancy?”
Evelyn looked toward the phone.
“Daniel?”
The line disconnected.
Police traced the signal to an apartment near the harbor.
It was empty.
Inside were medical equipment, BrightForge files, and photographs of Nancy taken from a distance.
Daniel had watched the family for months.
One wall displayed images of Brandon, Evelyn, Samantha, Alicia, and Dr. Hart.
Strings connected each person to company records.
The apartment looked like an investigator’s workspace.
Or an obsession.
A calendar marked the date Nancy first complained of pain.
Beside it Daniel had written:
B. BEGINS FINAL HUMAN PROOF.
He knew the experiment was occurring.
Why had he not warned Samantha?
A recorded message answered part of the question.
Daniel appeared on a laptop.
“I needed Brandon to expose the full trial structure. If I warned Samantha too early, he would destroy everything.”
Samantha stopped the video.
“He let Nancy continue swallowing magnets to build a case.”
Evelyn whispered, “He thought the doctors would intervene.”
“He knew she was in pain.”
Daniel continued.
“I did not know Brandon planned thirty-seven. I expected six. Evelyn was supposed to stop him.”
Evelyn looked away.
Daniel had trusted the mother who abandoned him as a child to protect another child.
She failed again.
The message included a location for the missing drives.
A decommissioned ferry terminal south of the harbor.
Police arrived and found the black medical case.
The drives were inside.
So was Daniel’s blood.
A trail led toward the water.
No body.
A security camera showed Daniel meeting someone at the terminal.
The second person was Alicia Moore.
She had left the hospital under protection hours earlier.
Alicia handed Daniel an envelope.
Then he gave her the server drives.
An unknown vehicle struck Daniel from behind.
Alicia dragged him out of the camera frame before the vehicle returned.
Police questioned her hospital guard.
He had been called away by an emergency involving his own child.
The call was false.
Alicia was no longer only a witness.
She had joined Daniel’s operation before becoming Nancy’s nanny.
She knew the experiment was beginning.
She installed the dining-room camera herself after gaining access to Samantha’s security account.
Samantha believed she had installed it privately.
Alicia had guided the decision.
The entire evidence trail had been prepared around Nancy.
Then Dr. Hart received the finalized laboratory analysis of the magnets.
Several carried microscopic fingerprints beneath the dissolvable coating.
Brandon’s prints appeared.
Evelyn’s appeared.
Alicia’s appeared.

And so did Daniel’s.
👉 Daniel claimed he was building a case against Brandon, but his fingerprints beneath the coating proved he had handled the magnets before Nancy swallowed them.
