Chapter 4 - The Petition Before the PainThe custody petition described an incident that had not yet happened.
It claimed Samantha left an open container of BrightForge prototype magnets on the dining-room table. Nancy supposedly swallowed them while Samantha slept after drinking wine.
No wine had been served in the house that week.
The decorative candy bowl belonged to Evelyn.
The petition even estimated the number of magnets.
Approximately thirty to forty pieces.
Samantha stared at the date.
Brandon’s attorney called it a hypothetical legal draft.
“Parents prepare emergency documents during marital conflict.”
“We were not discussing divorce,” Samantha said.
Brandon finally looked at her.
“You threatened to leave.”
“When?”
“Last month.”
“I said I would take Nancy to a hotel if your mother continued insulting her.”
“That is a threat to remove my child.”
“You called her lazy because she fell asleep at dinner.”
“She has always been dramatic.”
Dr. Hart entered the consultation room again.
“Do not describe a hospitalized child that way.”
Brandon glared at him.
“You are treating her body, not our family.”
“The condition of her body is why police are here.”
Dr. Hart placed the sealed surgical report beside the X-ray. Every magnet had been numbered, photographed, and stored separately.
He pointed to a pattern.
The first magnets swallowed had rough edges from BrightForge prototypes.
Later magnets were polished laboratory samples that had never been installed inside toys.
“Those could not have fallen out of a product,” he said. “Someone handled them before Nancy swallowed them.”
Brandon’s lawyer requested independent testing.
Elena agreed while keeping the originals under police seal.
Samantha asked to see Nancy.
The child lay beneath a white blanket in recovery, surrounded by monitors. Her face looked impossibly small against the pillow.
Samantha sat beside her and held her hand.
“Mommy?”
“I’m here.”
“Is Daddy mad?”
“No one is allowed to be angry with you.”
“I tried to hide the stars.”
“Where?”
Nancy’s eyes moved toward the doorway.
“Under my tongue.”
Samantha felt sick.
“Why?”
“Daddy said swallow. I spit one in my napkin.”
“What happened?”
“He squeezed my face.”
Samantha kept her voice steady.
“Did Grandma see?”
Nancy nodded.
“What did she do?”
“She cried in the bathroom.”
That explained the thumbnail of Evelyn covering her mouth.
She knew Brandon had forced the child.
Yet she continued giving Nancy more magnets afterward.
Samantha left recovery and confronted her in the hallway.
“You watched him force her.”
Evelyn stood near the nurses’ station, wrapped in an expensive cream coat.
“I did not understand what they were.”
“You watched Nancy resist.”
“Brandon said she needed to finish the medical test.”
“What medical test?”
Evelyn’s face changed.
BrightForge had been developing a dissolvable candy shell around magnets to test whether bitter coatings discouraged children from swallowing them. The company claimed all studies used laboratory equipment.
No human trial was approved.
Brandon told Evelyn that Nancy’s pediatrician had authorized a harmless taste-preference study.
“He said the objects would pass naturally,” Evelyn whispered.
“You believed a father was allowed to experiment on his daughter?”
“He said the company would collapse if regulators rejected the coating.”
“So you helped him.”
“I gave her six.”
The admission silenced the hallway.
“Six?” Elena asked from behind them.
Evelyn turned.
“I gave Nancy six silver pieces. Not thirty-six.”
“You watched Brandon force more?”
“I saw one night.”
“And said nothing?”
“He promised it would stop.”
Samantha stepped closer.
“My daughter needed surgery because you protected your son.”
Evelyn began crying.
“I was protecting the company that supports this family.”
Nancy’s trust came into the conversation for the first time when Brandon’s lawyer produced a financial statement.
If BrightForge collapsed, Brandon would lose access to the family fortune.
But Samantha discovered something worse.
Nancy held shares in BrightForge through a trust created by Samantha’s late father.
If Samantha were declared negligent and Brandon received full custody, he would gain voting authority over Nancy’s shares.
The child’s injury could save the company and transfer control to him at the same time.
Then Samantha’s phone received a bank alert.
Someone had attempted to access Nancy’s trust account using the hospital’s Wi-Fi.
