Chapter 2 - Magic StarsNancy was taken into surgery at 7:18 p.m.

Samantha remained in the family consultation room with rainwater streaking the windows and police officers guarding both exits.
Brandon paced near the wall.
Evelyn sat with her hands clasped tightly enough to whiten her fingers.
Officer Elena Ruiz placed the evidence tablet on the table.
“Mrs. Vale, what were you giving Nancy?”
Evelyn lifted her chin.
“Vitamins.”
“From a candy bowl?”
“They were mineral supplements Brandon purchased.”
Elena turned toward him.
“What brand?”
“I don’t remember.”
“You gave your mother an unmarked supplement for a five-year-old?”
“They came in a sample package.”
“Where is the package?”
Brandon looked at Evelyn.
She looked away.
Samantha leaned forward.
“Nancy called them magic stars.”
Evelyn’s voice sharpened.
“Children invent names.”
“She said Brandon gave them to you.”
“She misunderstood.”
“She saw him standing in the doorway.”
Brandon struck the table with his palm.
“Our daughter is in surgery and you are turning this into an interrogation.”
Elena did not react.
“It became an investigation when the doctor reported suspected deliberate ingestion.”
Brandon’s expression shifted.
“Suspected.”
“Thirty-six high-powered magnets do not appear inside a child by accident.”
Evelyn began crying.
“They were silver. Brandon said they contained iron and would help her energy. Nancy was tired all the time.”
Samantha stared at her.
“You gave a child unidentified objects because Brandon told you they were healthy?”
“He is her father.”
“That is not medical training.”
Brandon moved toward Samantha.
“You approved supplements before.”
“Not metal.”
“You don’t know what they were.”
“The X-ray knows.”
Elena opened another section of footage.
The dining-room camera had recorded four separate evenings.
Each time, Evelyn sat beside Nancy.
Each time, she removed several silver objects from the decorative bowl.
On the first evening, Nancy swallowed them with juice.
On the second, she resisted.
Evelyn held the child’s chin and whispered something the camera could not capture.
On the third, Brandon appeared in the doorway.
On the fourth, the camera feed ended abruptly after he looked directly toward the lens.
The account logs showed the security application had been disabled using Brandon’s administrator password.
“You knew about the camera,” Samantha said.
Brandon’s face remained still.
“I discovered it.”
“And shut it off.”
“It was illegal for you to record my mother without permission.”
“It was our dining room.”
“You installed surveillance without telling your husband.”
“I was protecting Nancy.”
“From us?”
“Yes.”
The word landed with more force than Samantha expected.
For years, she softened accusations to preserve the marriage. She said Brandon was stressed. Evelyn was overbearing. Their family had different parenting traditions.
Now thirty-six magnets were being cut from her daughter’s body.
No softer language remained.
A nurse entered carrying a sealed belongings bag.
Inside was Nancy’s purple gown, socks, and a plastic bracelet from the operating room.
“Dr. Hart asked whether the police want the clothing preserved.”
Elena nodded.
“Everything.”
The nurse hesitated.
“There’s something else. Nancy had this inside her gown pocket.”
She removed a folded piece of paper.
A child’s uneven handwriting covered it.
MOMMY, GRANDMA SAYS THE STARS MAKE DADDY LOVE ME.
Samantha pressed one hand over her mouth.
Evelyn began shaking.
“I never said that.”
Nancy had written only part of the message.
Beneath the child’s words appeared another line in adult handwriting.
If Samantha asks, say Nancy found them in her toy box.
Elena compared the handwriting to the hospital intake form Brandon had completed.
The letters matched.
Brandon stopped pacing.
His attorney had not yet arrived.
For the first time, he looked afraid of speaking.
A second nurse entered.
Dr. Hart had removed the first cluster of magnets. Several were coated in a thin, dissolvable shell that smelled faintly sweet.
They had been disguised as candy.
Elena looked at Brandon.
“Where did you get them?”
He answered quietly.
“My company manufactures educational toys.”
Samantha felt the next truth before he said it.
Brandon’s company produced magnetic construction sets.
