Chapter 10 - The Thirty-Seventh MagnetNancy returned to surgery.
Samantha stood outside the operating-room doors while anger and fear fought inside her chest.
Dr. Hart had counted every extracted object. The thirty-seventh magnet did not appear clearly on the first post-operative scan because it rested near a metal surgical clip.
The second procedure was shorter.
Dr. Hart removed the magnet without additional injury.
Inside its coating was a capsule smaller than a grain of rice.
Police preserved it.
Daniel had known exactly where it was.
He called again after surgery.
This time, Elena recorded the conversation.
“Why was the capsule inside Nancy?” Samantha asked.
“Because Alicia needed evidence outside BrightForge.”
“Alicia put it there?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“Evelyn.”
Everyone turned toward her.
Evelyn shook her head.
“I never saw a capsule.”
Daniel explained that he contacted Evelyn six months earlier. He warned her Brandon was reviving the child trials. He sent her a memory capsule containing BrightForge’s original research files.
He instructed her to deliver it to federal investigators.
Evelyn hid it instead.
“I was afraid Brandon would know I spoke to you,” she whispered.
“When did you put it in Nancy’s magnet?” Samantha demanded.
“I didn’t.”
Daniel went silent.
Then he said, “Brandon must have found the capsule.”
He coated it inside the thirty-seventh magnet.
Why?
To destroy it inside Nancy’s body or recover it during a controlled medical procedure.
But the emergency surgery occurred at a hospital Brandon did not choose.
His original plan likely involved a private clinic connected to BrightForge.
Samantha disrupted it by driving Nancy to Dr. Hart’s hospital.
The capsule contained encrypted files.
Alicia provided the key.
The archive opened.
Videos showed Daniel inside a laboratory as a teenager. Doctors placed magnetic devices against his body and recorded neurological reactions. Brandon, then in his twenties, watched from behind the glass.
He was not merely aware.
He participated.
A later file showed Leonard confronting him.
“You will shut this down.”
Brandon answered, “Daniel’s results can prevent thousands of accidents.”
“You are using him.”
“He is my brother.”
“That is not consent.”
Leonard threatened to report BrightForge.
The final video ended as Brandon followed him into the hallway.
The capsule also contained the original company trial list.
Seventeen children.
Not twelve.
Five names had been removed from the laboratory server.
One belonged to Nancy.
Another belonged to Caleb Hart.
The final three were children of BrightForge executives who disappeared after signing confidentiality agreements.
Dr. Hart stared at his nephew’s file.
Caleb’s death had been classified as accidental ingestion.
The original study notes showed he was given magnets during a “taste aversion test.”
Brandon signed the protocol.
Dr. Hart stepped toward him when police brought Brandon back for formal questioning.
Elena blocked the doctor.
“Do not give his attorney a reason to attack the evidence.”
Dr. Hart forced himself to stop.
Brandon smiled.
“You want someone to blame for your nephew.”
“I have the report you signed.”
“You have stolen files from an unidentified capsule.”
The capsule’s chain of custody could be challenged because it had passed through Nancy’s body.
Brandon intended that.
He wanted the evidence to look contaminated, cruelly hidden by someone else, and impossible to authenticate.
Then Daniel sent a final message.
The original server is not at BrightForge. It is beneath the Vale Foundation pediatric wing.
Evelyn’s face emptied.
Her charity hospital contained the master evidence.
Before police could secure it, the pediatric wing reported a fire alarm.
Security cameras showed a man using Brandon’s badge entering the lower server room.
