Chapter 1

Eight-Year-Old Shows Her Father the Marks on Her Back—Then Names the Grandfather Waiting Downstairs.
Harrison Vance thought the worst part of that afternoon would be helping his eight-year-old daughter stop crying before her ballet recital.
Then Chloe turned her back to him.
The zipper of her pale-pink recital dress was halfway down, her blonde hair pinned into a neat ballet bun, her tiny shoulders trembling beneath the soft window light of her bedroom.
Across her shoulder blade and lower back were faint yellow-purple marks.
Not one bruise.
Not a scrape.
Marks.
Shaped like fingers.
Harrison’s breath caught so sharply he had to grip the edge of the wooden dresser.
“Chloe… who did this to you?”
His voice stayed gentle because hers was already breaking.
Chloe clutched the front of her dress with both hands.
Her lower lip shook.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, “Grandpa Richard.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Downstairs, Richard Vance was waiting near the front door, ready to drive them to Chloe’s recital like a proud grandfather.
Harrison lifted the dress fabric back over Chloe’s shoulders with shaking hands, protecting her privacy before anything else.
Then he pulled her into his arms.
A heavy knock hit the bedroom door.
Before Harrison answered, the door pushed open.
Richard stood in the hallway in his navy polo shirt and khaki pants, his silver hair perfectly combed, his face irritated instead of concerned.
“She fell,” Richard said. “Don’t let her manipulate you.”
Chloe flinched into her father’s chest.
Harrison stood slowly and placed himself between his daughter and the door.
“Falls don’t leave handprints.”
For the first time in Harrison’s life, his father’s confident face changed.
Then Meredith appeared behind him, phone in hand.
She saw Chloe’s back and covered her mouth.
A second later, she was beside her daughter, wrapping the pink dress closed.
She looked straight at Richard.
“The police are already coming.”
Harrison locked the bedroom door.
Outside, Richard stood in the hallway.
