Chapter 4

At the hospital, the doctor asked Chloe before touching her.
Every time.
“May I look at your shoulder?”
“Can I check your lower back?”
“Is it okay if your mom stays beside you?”
Chloe nodded carefully each time.
Harrison stood near the wall, arms crossed tightly, feeling every second like punishment.
The marks were photographed.
Measured.
Documented.
Not because anyone wanted to turn Chloe into evidence, but because men like Richard counted on marks fading before truth could become official.
A child advocate brought Chloe a small stuffed rabbit.
Chloe took it with both hands.
“Do I have to give it back?”
The advocate smiled gently.
“No. It’s yours.”
Chloe stared at the rabbit like ownership itself was surprising.
Detective Alan Price arrived after the exam.
He asked Harrison about Richard’s behavior.
About old punishments.
About Chloe’s fear.
About whether Richard had been alone with her.
Each question scraped open something Harrison had buried.
Yes.
Sometimes.
Too often.
I should have known.
Meredith reached for his hand beneath the hospital table.
Not to excuse him.
To keep him from collapsing into guilt while Chloe still needed him upright.
Then the detective asked, “Did your father ever leave marks on you when you were a child?”
Harrison looked through the glass at Chloe sitting on the hospital bed, holding the stuffed rabbit.
“Yes,” he said.
The word felt like opening a locked basement.
That night, Chloe stayed under observation.
Meredith slept in the chair beside her.
Harrison stayed near the door.
At 3:00 a.m., Chloe woke and looked around in panic.
“Is Grandpa here?”
Harrison stood immediately.
“No.”
“Can he come in?”
“No.”
“Will you let him?”
The question hit harder than accusation.
Harrison walked to her bedside and lowered his voice.
“Never again.”
Chloe held his gaze for a long time.
Then she closed her eyes.
