Chapter 6

Richard violated the protective order within forty-eight hours.

That surprised everyone except Meredith.

“He won’t accept being told no,” she said.

She was right.

Harrison returned home with police to collect Chloe’s clothes, school bag, and favorite blanket.

Chloe asked to come too.

The child advocate said it might help her feel some control, as long as officers stayed close.

In her bedroom, the recital dress still lay across the bed.

Pink.

Soft.

Ruined by memory.

Chloe touched the skirt.

Meredith said gently, “We don’t have to keep it.”

Chloe looked up.

“I wanted to dance in it.”

Harrison swallowed.

“You still can someday.”

“Everyone will look.”

“Then we’ll choose who gets to look.”

Before Chloe could answer, a car door slammed outside.

Officer Moore moved to the window.

Richard stood near the sidewalk, arguing with another officer.

He had come despite the no-contact order.

Control always tests the first locked door.

Chloe froze.

Harrison immediately closed the curtain.

Richard’s voice rose outside.

“Harrison!”

The old command in his name still landed somewhere deep.

For one second, Harrison’s body wanted to obey.

Then Chloe whispered, “Are you going to him?”

He turned.

His daughter was clutching the stuffed rabbit, eyes wide with the same fear he remembered from his own childhood.

“No,” he said.

“I’m staying with you.”

Outside, Richard shouted again.

This time, Harrison did not move.

The officer outside detained him for violating the order.

Chloe’s shoulders slowly lowered.

Meredith wrapped an arm around her.

That was the day Harrison realized protection was not one grand confrontation.

It was a thousand smaller refusals.

Not answering the shout.

Closing the curtain.
