Chapter 9

Chloe did not dance at the public recital.
For weeks, she pretended that did not matter.
Then Harrison found her sitting on the bedroom floor with the pink dress in her lap.
The little silver wings were beside her.
Bent, but not broken.
“I wasn’t crying,” she said quickly.
Harrison sat across from her.
“Okay.”
She frowned.
“You’re supposed to say it’s okay to cry.”
“It is.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
“Because you said you weren’t.”
Chloe thought about that.
Then tears filled her eyes.
“I wanted to dance.”
“I know.”
“Now everyone will know.”
“Know what?”
“That something happened.”
Harrison nodded.
“Maybe.”
She looked frightened.
He added, “But what happened is not who you are.”
A month later, her ballet teacher arranged a private recital.
No audience full of strangers.
No phones.
No pressure.
Only Meredith, Harrison, Dr. Klein, Officer Moore, and two girls from Chloe’s class she had chosen herself.
Chloe wore the pink dress.
Meredith zipped it carefully.
For a moment, Chloe turned and checked her back in the mirror.
The marks had faded.
The memory had not.
She whispered, “Can you still see?”
Meredith kissed her hair.
“I see my brave girl.”
Chloe looked at Harrison.
“What do you see?”
He crouched beside her.
“A dancer.”
The music started.
Chloe froze.
Then lifted one arm.
Then the other.
Her first step trembled.
The next did not.
By the time she finished, everyone was crying except Chloe.
She bowed seriously, like the performance was taking place on the world’s most important stage.
Then she ran into Harrison’s arms.
“I did it.”
He held her carefully.
“Yes,” he whispered. “You did.”
That night, the pink dress went back into her closet.
Not hidden.
Not thrown away.
May you like
Hers again.
