Chapter 3

The police arrived quietly.

No dramatic sirens at the curb.

No shouting.

Just two officers at the front door and the sound of Richard’s polished voice trying to make everything seem reasonable.

“My granddaughter fell,” he said.

“My son is emotional.”

“This family does not need strangers involved.”

Harrison stood inside Chloe’s bedroom with one hand on the locked door and the other holding his daughter’s.

Chloe sat on the edge of the bed, wrapped in Meredith’s arms, the pink dress pulled closed around her shoulders.

A female officer knocked softly.

“Mr. Vance? We need to make sure Chloe is safe.”

Harrison opened the door.

Officer Rachel Moore stepped in slowly, lowering herself to Chloe’s eye level.

“Hi, sweetheart. I’m Rachel. You are not in trouble.”

Chloe’s eyes filled again.

That told Harrison everything.

Somewhere along the way, his daughter had learned that telling the truth might make her guilty.

Richard tried to speak from the hallway.

“She’s confused.”

Officer Moore turned sharply.

“Sir, do not speak to her.”

Richard’s mouth closed.

For the first time, someone outside the family had stopped him.

Chloe whispered, “He said Daddy would be mad if I told.”

Harrison’s chest tightened.

He knelt in front of her.

“I’m not mad at you.”

She looked at him, searching his face for proof.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Meredith held the phone against her chest, tears slipping down her face.

The second officer asked Richard to step downstairs.

Richard refused at first.

Then tried to laugh.

Then realized no one was laughing with him.

When the paramedics arrived, Chloe asked if she still had to dance.

Meredith shook her head.

“No, baby.”

Chloe looked relieved.

Then ashamed of being relieved.

Harrison took her small hand.

“The recital can wait.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“Grandpa said everyone would hate me if I ruined it.”

Harrison looked toward the doorway.

The old fear inside him burned away.
