Chapter 5
Richard’s first defense was reputation.
He called relatives.
Neighbors.
Old friends.
Anyone who would listen.
He said Chloe was sensitive.
He said Meredith disliked him.
He said Harrison had always been weak.
By noon, people were calling Harrison.
His aunt said, “Your father is strict, but he loves that child.”
A cousin said, “Kids exaggerate when they’re scared.”
His mother, Carol, called from Florida and whispered, “Please don’t destroy the family.”
Harrison stood in the hospital hallway and looked through the glass at Chloe.
“She is the family I’m protecting.”
Carol began to cry.
“He’s your father.”
“No,” Harrison said. “He is the man my daughter named.”
The silence on the line lasted long enough for the truth to settle.
Then Carol whispered, “He was hard on you too.”
Harrison closed his eyes.
“Hard isn’t the word.”
She did not argue.
That was the first honest thing she had done in years.
Later, Detective Price recovered Chloe’s tablet from her bedroom.
She used it to record ballet practice.
The last video had been made the day before the recital.
It did not show everything.
But it caught enough.
Chloe’s small voice said, “Grandpa, that hurts.”
Richard’s voice answered, cold and low, “Then stop acting weak.”
Then Chloe cried, “Please don’t tell Daddy I was bad.”
Richard replied, “Your father already knows you disappoint him.”
Harrison had to sit down when the detective played it.
Not because Richard had lied.
Harrison expected that.
Because Chloe had believed her father might agree.
Meredith put both hands over her mouth and sobbed.
Harrison stared at the tablet.
The greatest damage Richard had done was not only the marks on Chloe’s back.
It was the lie he planted inside her.
