Chapter 7

Chloe’s therapy began with drawings.

At first, she drew houses with no doors.

Then houses with doors but no windows.

Then one house with a locked door and three people standing outside it.

When Dr. Klein asked who was behind the locked door, Chloe whispered, “Grandpa.”

The three people outside were Chloe, Meredith, and Harrison.

Holding hands.

When Harrison saw the drawing, he nearly left the room.

Not because it was hopeless.

Because it wasn’t.

Hope felt undeserved.

He had missed too much.

Meredith found him in the hallway.

“You don’t get to disappear into guilt,” she said.

He looked at her.

“I should have stopped him sooner.”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt.

Then Meredith added, “So should I.”

He shook his head.

“This isn’t your fault.”

“It isn’t yours alone either.”

They stood there quietly.

Two parents facing the awful truth that loving a child did not mean they had automatically seen everything.

“We do better now,” Meredith said.

Harrison nodded.

They changed the locks.

Changed pickup permissions at school.

Canceled Richard from every emergency contact list.

Told Chloe’s ballet teacher only what was needed.

No gossip.

No cover-up.

Just safety.

At night, Chloe asked if her bedroom door could stay open.

Then asked if Harrison could sit in the hallway.

He brought a pillow.

Then a book.

Then a thermos of coffee.

For twenty-three nights, he sat outside her door until she slept.

Sometimes Chloe woke and whispered, “Dad?”

“I’m here.”

“Still?”

“Still.”

That word became a promise.

Still here.

Still listening.

Still believing.

Still not letting Grandpa back in.

One night, she whispered, “Was Grandpa mean to you too?”

Harrison closed the book.

“Yes.”

“Did you tell?”

“No.”

“Why?”

He stared at the floor.

“Because I thought no one would believe me.”

Chloe was quiet.

Then she said, “I believe you.”

Harrison covered his face with one hand.

For the first time, his daughter gave him something his childhood never had.
