Chapter 10 - THE LETTERS

Silver Pines kept copies of outgoing patient correspondence for therapeutic documentation when cognition was impaired.
That practice gave us fourteen letters.
All addressed to me.
None received.
First:
Ethan, I don’t know what Mom told you. I am sick. I remember enough to know I did not leave Lily.
Second:
Please bring Lily. I need to see her face so I know what is real.
Third:
Mom says you filed for divorce. I cannot find it.
Fourth:
I am improving. They say my memory may be unreliable. I remember our kitchen. I remember Lily’s unicorn pajamas. I remember you crying in the garage because you didn’t want her to see.
That memory was real.
No one else knew.
Then:
If you really don’t want me, please tell me yourself.
Every letter had a disposition note.
Released to conservator for mailing at patient request.
Conservator:
Marlene Foster.
May you like
Marlene never mailed them.
Not one.
