Chapter 15 - ANNA AND LILY

Their first meeting took place with a therapist.
Lily asked me to stay in the hallway.
That surprised me.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I want Mom first.”
I nearly cried.
Anna entered through another door.
I saw her only briefly.
Smaller.
Older.
A slight tremor in one hand.
Then the door closed.
Forty-eight minutes.
I stared at the clock.
When Lily emerged, she had been crying.
So had Anna.
Lily took my hand.
“She smells the same.”
That was all she said until the car.
Then:
“Mom thought I hated her.”
“I know.”
“Why would Grandma say that?”
“I don’t know every reason yet.”
“She’s evil.”
I wanted to agree.
Instead:
“What Grandma did was very wrong.”
“Same.”

Not always.
