Chapter 12 - LILY REMEMBERS
When Lily was five, children did not understand disappearance like adults.
She remembered moments.
Grandma putting Mom’s clothes into boxes.
Grandma saying:
“Daddy gets sad when you ask.”
Grandma taking the framed wedding photograph from the hallway because:
“It’s healthier.”
I had thought Marlene was helping.
Lily remembered one afternoon differently.
She was six.
Marlene had been babysitting.
Phone rang.
Marlene answered.
Then went into the kitchen.
Lily followed.
A woman’s voice from speaker.
“Can I hear her?”
Lily thought it sounded like Mom.
Marlene ended the call.
Then told Lily:
“You imagined that.”
Children accept adults’ versions when adults say them confidently.
At nine, seeing the recent photograph in Marlene’s purse made the memory return.
That was why she kept searching.
