Chapter 22 - ANNA COMES HOME, BUT NOT HOME

Anna did not move back into our house.

That hurt.

It was also right.

She rented a small apartment eight minutes away with supported-living visits twice a week.

“I don’t know you anymore,” she told me.

“I know.”

“I love parts I remember.”

“I know.”

“And parts I remember make me angry.”

“I know.”

“You’re saying that too much.”

“Probably.”

She laughed.

First time.

Lily spent Saturdays.

Then one overnight.

Then Wednesdays after school.

No court forcing reunification faster than relationships could tolerate.

Anna learned Lily’s teacher’s name.

Favorite music.

Best friend.

Allergies.

The fact she now hated peas.
