Chapter 19 - THE CENTRAL TRUTH
The full truth emerged from Marlene’s emails with her sister Carol.
Not a master conspiracy.
A mother’s fear becoming entitlement.
Early:
Anna is very sick. Ethan will make everything worse.
Then:
If Ethan gets involved he’ll take Lily and Anna will never recover.
Then months later:
Anna keeps asking for him. I told her he’s dating.
Carol replied:
Is he?
Marlene:
Does it matter? She calms down when she believes there’s nothing to go back to.
Then:
Ethan keeps sending letters. I’m throwing them away.
Carol:
That’s not your decision.
Marlene:
Someone has to make decisions.
There.
The sentence.
Someone has to make decisions.
Two years later, money entered.
The trust pays me because I’m doing everything. Ethan gets to be the good father while I carry Anna.
Then:
If Anna goes home, what happens to me?
Carol:
She’s your daughter.
Marlene:
Exactly.
Not:
What happens to Anna?
What happens to me?
Marlene had begun from fear.
She genuinely distrusted me.
Genuinely believed Anna’s neurological illness made contact dangerous.
Then Anna improved.
The justification weakened.
But Marlene had become:
Conservator.
Gatekeeper.
Paid caregiver.
Necessary mother.
The person Anna needed permission from.
The person Lily visited.
The person I called whenever I wanted information.
If Anna returned, Marlene lost all of those roles.
So she manufactured reasons not to return.
I was abusive.
Anna was unstable.
Lily had moved on.
The marriage was dead.
Then she carried a recent letter in her purse because Anna’s new attorney had begun challenging the conservatorship.
The letter Lily saw said:
Please tell Ethan I never stopped trying. My attorney says I can petition to end Mom’s authority. I need to know whether Ethan will speak to me.
Marlene had been given one last chance to deliver it.
She did not.
Lily found it instead.
That was why Marlene pinned her to the floor.
