PART 1

“Her father locked her barefoot in the snow on Christmas Eve… then a black limousine arrived, and her billionaire grandmother said one word that ended everything.”

Grace Whitmore was standing barefoot in the snow when the black limousine stopped at the gate.

Her pale pink nightdress clung to her shaking body.

Her dark hair was wet from melted snow.

Her toes had gone numb so long ago that the pain had turned strangely quiet.

Behind her, the mansion glowed with Christmas lights.

Warm windows.

Gold chandeliers.

A twelve-foot tree.

A family dinner still happening without her.

Inside, her father sat at the table.

Her stepmother, Victoria, watched from the window.

Her half-brother Julian held a mug of cocoa and smiled like watching Grace freeze was entertainment.

Grace wrapped her arms around herself and tried not to fall.

She had stopped knocking after the tenth time.

She had stopped crying after the twentieth minute.

Then the limousine door opened.

Eleanor Whitmore stepped out in a white fur-trimmed coat, silver hair pinned perfectly, diamond earrings flashing under the snow.

Grace blinked through tears.

For one second, she thought she was hallucinating.

“Grandma…”

Her voice broke.

“Dad locked me outside.”

Eleanor froze.

The chauffeur behind her stopped moving.

Two security men stepped out of the second car.

Eleanor looked at Grace’s bare feet.

Then at her blue fingers.

Then at the wet nightdress.

Then slowly toward the mansion.

The warmth inside suddenly looked obscene.

Eleanor walked to Grace and removed her own coat.

She wrapped it around the girl’s shoulders with hands that did not tremble.

Then she looked at the front door.

“Open that door.”

“Now.”

The mansion stayed silent for three seconds.

Then the door opened.

Grace’s father, Richard Whitmore, appeared in the doorway wearing a cashmere sweater and irritation.

Victoria stood behind him in a red velvet dress.

Julian peeked over the banister.

Richard lifted his chin.

“She needed discipline.”

The snow seemed to stop around Eleanor.

She looked at her son.

Then down at Grace’s bare feet sinking into the white ground.

“You locked my granddaughter in the snow?”

Richard’s confidence flickered.

“She was disrespectful.”

Eleanor turned slightly toward her security chief.

Her voice was quiet.

One word.

“Demolish.”

Richard blinked.

“What?”

Eleanor did not blink back.

“This house.”

“This trust.”

“This life you built with my money.”

May you like

“Demolish all of it.”
