PART 4
Eleanor did not shout when Richard tried to defend himself.
That frightened him more than shouting would have.
She walked past him into the mansion with Grace wrapped in her coat.
The security men followed.
A private nurse ran in with a thermal blanket and medical kit.
Victoria stepped backward as if Eleanor had brought winter inside with her.
“Eleanor,” she said carefully.
“What a surprise.”
Eleanor looked at the emerald necklace resting on Victoria’s throat.
Her face did not change.
That made Victoria touch it nervously.
Richard forced a laugh.
“Mother, this has been exaggerated.”
Eleanor guided Grace to the sofa by the fire.
The nurse knelt to check her feet.
Grace winced when warmth touched her skin.
Eleanor heard that tiny sound and turned slowly toward her son.
“You locked her out long enough for her feet to begin freezing.”
Richard’s mouth tightened.
“She was being impossible.”
Victoria added, “Teenage girls can be manipulative.”
Grace stared at the fire, unable to stop shaking.
Julian stood near the staircase, still holding his phone.
Eleanor’s eyes moved to him.
“Were you filming her?”
Julian’s smirk vanished.
“No.”
Eleanor held out one hand.
“Phone.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“He is a minor.”
“He is seventeen,” Eleanor said.
“And cruel enough to be useful evidence.”
Julian looked at Richard.
Richard did nothing.
Slowly, Julian handed over the phone.
Eleanor gave it to her security chief.
Then she looked at Victoria.
“Remove the necklace.”
Victoria went very still.
“It was a gift from my husband.”
“It belonged to Caroline.”
Richard snapped, “Caroline is dead.”
Grace flinched.
Eleanor turned to him.
“And yet she still owns more dignity in this room than you.”
Richard’s face reddened.
“This is my house.”
Eleanor looked around the foyer.
The marble floors.
The chandelier.
The carved staircase.
The garlands.
The expensive furniture.
“No,” she said.
“It is not.”
The room went silent.
Richard blinked.
“What does that mean?”
Eleanor removed her gloves one finger at a time.
“It means your father left this property in a generation-skipping trust.”
“I allowed you to live here.”
“I allowed you to manage it.”
“I allowed you to pretend.”
Then her voice became ice.
May you like
“And tonight, you locked the beneficiary in the snow.”
