PART 3

At first, Grace thought her father would open the door after one minute.

Then five.

Then ten.

She stood on the front steps barefoot because Victoria had ordered the staff to take her slippers before dinner.

The snow came down thick and fast.

It melted through the thin fabric of her nightdress.

Her teeth chattered so hard her jaw hurt.

She knocked once.

No one came.

She knocked again.

Julian’s face appeared at the window.

He lifted his phone and laughed.

Grace turned away because humiliation felt colder than the storm.

Inside the house, the Christmas music continued.

She could hear it faintly through the glass.

A warm song about peace on earth.

Her father opened the door once after fifteen minutes.

Grace tried to step forward.

He blocked her.

“Ready to apologize?”

Grace was shaking too hard to speak clearly.

“For what?”

His expression hardened.

“For embarrassing my wife.”

“She wore Mom’s necklace.”

“And you will learn that what belongs to this family is mine to distribute.”

Grace stared at him.

“No.”

That one word did it.

Richard stepped back and shut the door in her face.

This time, she heard the lock turn.

From the inside.

Then another sound.

The outside deadbolt sliding.

Grace looked down.

He had locked the exterior latch too.

Not just closed the door.

Locked her out.

The wind pushed snow against her ankles.

She walked toward the side entrance.

Locked.

Back terrace.

Locked.

Garage.

Locked.

She found one security camera near the front gate and stood beneath it, waving her arms weakly.

No one came.

What Grace did not know was that Eleanor had received an alert twenty-seven minutes earlier.

The security system at the mansion still sent emergency footage to Eleanor’s estate office.

Richard had forgotten that because Richard never paid attention to anything he thought he already owned.

Eleanor had seen the live feed.

Her granddaughter.

Barefoot.

Outside.

Snow gathering on her shoulders.

Eleanor watched exactly twelve seconds.

Then she called her security chief.

“Bring the cars.”

“Bring medical.”

“And bring the file on Richard.”

The limousine left Eleanor’s estate seven minutes later.

By the time it reached the Whitmore mansion, Grace’s lips were almost blue.
