part 7

PART 7
Richard came to Eleanor’s estate two days after Christmas.
He was not invited.
The front gate stopped him.
Security cameras showed him standing outside in a wool coat, face red from cold and humiliation.
Grace watched from Eleanor’s office window.
Her feet were in soft slippers.
Her mother’s emerald necklace rested against her collarbone.
Richard shouted into the gate intercom.
“Grace, come out here.”
Eleanor stood behind her.
“You do not have to speak to him.”
Grace knew that.
But something inside her needed to hear what he would say when he no longer had a door to lock.
She pressed the intercom button.
“I’m here.”
Richard’s expression shifted instantly.
A father’s face.
Concerned.
Wounded.
False.
“Sweetheart, this has gone too far.”
“You scared us.”
Grace looked at Eleanor.
Then back at the screen.
“I scared you?”
“You disappeared with my mother.”
“I left with Grandma after you locked me outside.”
His jaw tightened.
“You were being dramatic.”
Grace almost laughed.
Even now.
Even through the gate.
Same script.
“Dad, my feet were turning blue.”
“You needed consequences.”
“No.”
Her voice grew steadier.
“I needed a father.”
Richard’s face changed.
Real anger now.
“You think Eleanor will protect you forever?”
Grace leaned closer to the intercom.
“No.”
“I think she protected me long enough for me to see you clearly.”
He started shouting then.
About betrayal.
About money.
About Victoria being humiliated.
About Julian being suspended from school after the video spread among parents.
Grace listened.
Not because she cared.
Because every word proved what Eleanor had told her.
Richard missed the control.
Not the daughter.
Then Eleanor took the intercom.
“Richard.”
He stopped.
“You have until noon tomorrow to vacate the mansion under court order.”
His face went slack.
“What?”
“The emergency petition was granted.”
“Your authority is suspended.”
“The residence will be cleared, inventoried, and prepared for structural review.”
He stared into the camera.
“You cannot throw me out of my own home.”
Eleanor’s answer was quiet.
“I am not.”
“Grace is.”
Grace felt the weight of it then.
Not revenge.
Ownership.

A life returned to her hands.
