PART 5
Richard laughed because denial was the only tool he had left.
“Grace owns nothing.”
“She is eighteen.”
“She is a child.”
Eleanor looked at the nurse wrapping Grace’s feet.
“She became the trust beneficiary at eighteen.”
“Three months ago.”
“Her silence did not make your theft legal.”
Victoria’s eyes flicked toward Richard.
That was the first crack between them.
Grace looked up, confused.
“Grandma?”
Eleanor’s expression softened only for her.
“Your mother wanted you protected.”
“She knew your father.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Do not poison her against me.”
Eleanor turned back.
“You did that barefoot in a snowstorm.”
The security chief returned with Julian’s phone.
His face was grim.
“There are videos.”
Julian went pale.
Victoria whispered, “Delete them.”
Eleanor’s head turned toward her.
“Thank you for the obstruction suggestion.”
Victoria shut her mouth.
The security chief continued.
“He recorded Miss Grace outside.”
“He sent one clip to a group chat.”
“He wrote, ‘Princess finally got put out.’”
Grace’s eyes filled.
Julian looked at the floor.
Eleanor did not look angry now.
She looked finished.
“Call Attorney Graves.”
The security chief nodded.
Richard’s face changed at the name.
Helen Graves had handled the Whitmore estate for forty years.
She had never lost a trust fight.
Richard tried to soften his voice.
“Mother.”
“Grace is emotional.”
“She has been difficult since Caroline died.”
Grace made a small sound.
Eleanor crossed the room and slapped Richard once.
Not hard enough to injure.
Hard enough to end the performance.
“You do not use her mother’s death to excuse your cruelty.”
The room froze.
Richard touched his cheek.
Victoria gasped.
Julian stared.
Eleanor turned to the staff.
“Pack Grace’s essential belongings.”
“No one from this household is to enter her room.”
Victoria snapped, “You cannot just take her.”
Grace stood then.
Still wrapped in the coat.
Still shaking.
But standing.
“I’m going with Grandma.”
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“You walk out that door, do not come back.”
Grace looked around the mansion that had stopped being home years ago.
Then she looked at her father.
May you like
“I was already outside.”
