PART 9

The demolition did not happen overnight.

That only happened in dramatic stories.

In real life, cruelty had paperwork.

Permits.

Environmental reviews.

Asset valuations.

Historical board questions.

Richard’s lawyers fought for an injunction.

They argued sentimental value.

Family legacy.

Irreparable harm.

Helen Graves submitted Julian’s video.

The trust audit.

Medical records from Christmas Eve.

Photographs of Grace’s feet.

The court denied Richard’s request.

Grace did not attend that hearing.

She was applying to college again.

This time, the applications were submitted from Eleanor’s office.

No missing forms.

No sabotaged deadlines.

No Victoria “accidentally” mailing the wrong envelope.

In January, Julian sent a handwritten apology.

Eleanor handed it to Grace unopened.

“Your choice.”

Grace stared at it.

Then opened it.

It said he was sorry if she felt hurt.

Grace folded it once and handed it back.

“That’s not an apology.”

Eleanor smiled faintly.

“No.”

“It is an attempt to reduce evidence.”

Richard’s business began to collapse when investors learned his trust authority had been suspended.

Victoria’s spending accounts were frozen.

Julian’s school placed him on disciplinary probation for recording and distributing the video.

The family that had watched Grace freeze now learned the slow discomfort of consequences.

On the morning demolition began, Grace stood beside Eleanor behind a safety barrier.

Snow covered the ground again.

Not as heavily as Christmas Eve.

But enough.

The mansion looked beautiful in winter light.

That was the worst part.

Ugly things often wear beautiful walls.

The first machine struck the east wing.

A cracking sound split the air.

Grace flinched.

Eleanor reached for her hand.

“Are you sure?”

Grace watched the room above the garage collapse.

The room she had slept in after Victoria moved her there.

“Yes.”

When the front door finally came down, Grace cried.

Not because she wanted the house.

Because some part of her had waited years for that door to open.

It never had.

May you like

So she watched it fall.
