PART 8

The mansion was cleared on December 28.

Grace did not go inside at first.

She sat in Eleanor’s car at the bottom of the drive while movers, attorneys, and security staff entered the house.

Richard stood near the front steps with Victoria and Julian.

Victoria wore dark sunglasses.

Julian kept his hood up.

Richard looked like a man being evicted from a throne he had mistaken for a birthright.

Helen Graves supervised everything.

Caroline’s jewelry went into sealed boxes.

Grace’s childhood belongings were packed separately.

Trust-purchased furniture was tagged.

Victoria’s personal items were removed.

Richard tried to stop the inventory twice.

Both times, the sheriff’s deputy reminded him the order was signed.

Grace finally stepped out when they brought down her mother’s portrait.

It had been removed from the upstairs hallway and stored in a closet.

Behind holiday decorations.

Face against the wall.

Grace walked to it slowly.

Dust covered the frame.

Caroline’s painted eyes looked back at her.

Grace touched the edge.

Victoria muttered, “This is excessive.”

Grace turned.

For the first time, she did not feel small in Victoria’s presence.

“You wore her necklace while her portrait was in a closet.”

Victoria’s mouth tightened.

“She was gone.”

Grace lifted her chin.

“No.”

“You tried to make her gone.”

Eleanor stood beside Grace.

“Bring the portrait to the car.”

A structural engineer arrived by noon.

Richard laughed bitterly.

“What is this now?”

Helen answered.

“The trust is evaluating whether the residence remains useful.”

Richard looked at Eleanor.

“You are not seriously demolishing it.”

Eleanor looked at Grace.

Not Richard.

Grace stared at the mansion.

The window where Julian watched her freeze.

The door Richard locked.

The room where Victoria wore her mother’s necklace.

The staircase where nobody came running.

For a moment, she saw all the Christmas lights still glowing behind cruelty.

Then she said, “I don’t want it.”

Richard’s face went pale.

“You little brat.”

Eleanor turned to the engineer.

“There is your answer.”

Grace took one breath.

May you like

“Demolish it.”
