PART 1

“He brought his ex-girlfriend on their anniversary trip… then his wife canceled the private island in front of everyone.”

Caleb smiled like he had already won when the seaplane rocked gently behind him on the turquoise water.

The Florida Keys glittered under the bright afternoon sun.

Luxury luggage sat stacked on the private dock.

His parents stood beside the bags in linen resort clothes, already complaining about the heat.

And behind Caleb, wearing a floral beach dress and a smug little smile, stood Tessa.

His ex-girlfriend.

On Lydia’s anniversary trip.

Lydia stood in her white pleated resort dress with her phone in one hand and her sunglasses pushed into her hair.

For three seconds, she said nothing.

She only looked at Tessa.

Then at Caleb.

Then at the private seaplane waiting to take them to the island Lydia had booked six months earlier.

Caleb pointed at the luggage.

“You’ll cook while we relax.”

His mother, Patricia, gave a tiny laugh.

As if humiliation were a family joke.

Tessa tilted her head and smiled.

“Don’t worry, Lydia.”

“I don’t eat much.”

Something inside Lydia went very still.

Not broken.

Still.

Caleb had told her his parents wanted to join for two nights.

He had never mentioned Tessa.

He had never mentioned that he expected Lydia to serve them.

He had never mentioned that the anniversary trip she planned for their marriage had become a vacation for the woman he once claimed he had forgotten.

Lydia lifted her phone.

Her voice was calm.

“Cancel the island.”

“Now.”

The pilot near the seaplane touched his headset.

Caleb’s smile vanished.

“What are you doing?”

The pilot listened, nodded once, and stepped back from the aircraft.

“Confirmed, ma’am.”

“The flight is canceled.”

The engine sound faded.

Caleb stared at Lydia.

Tessa turned toward him, panic replacing her smugness.

“Caleb… you said you paid for this.”

His father stopped adjusting his watch.

His mother’s mouth opened.

Lydia looked at the luggage.

Then at Caleb.

Then at the woman he had brought to her anniversary.

“I paid for everything.”

She walked past them.

Caleb reached for her arm.

“Lydia.”

She pulled away before his fingers touched her.

“No.”

“You wanted me to cook while you relaxed.”

She looked at the seaplane.

May you like

“Relax on the dock.”
