PART 7

Caleb’s anger had always worked behind closed doors.

Not because he was frightening in a dramatic way.

Because he knew exactly how to make Lydia doubt the cost of resisting him.

A sigh.

A slammed drawer.

Three days of silence.

A public joke that made her look insecure.

A private reminder that she was “too sensitive.”

On the dock, his tools had nowhere to hide.

“You think money makes you powerful?” he snapped.

Lydia looked at him.

“No.”

“I think receipts make people honest.”

Tessa let out a tiny sound.

Patricia whispered, “Caleb, stop.”

But Caleb had moved past caution.

“You liked being the rich wife when it made you look important.”

Lydia smiled faintly.

“I was the rich wife when it paid your mother’s gala table too.”

Patricia stiffened.

“And your father’s private clinic.”

Robert looked away.

“And your firm’s office renovation.”

Caleb’s eyes widened.

Lydia continued.

“And the debt you told everyone was a temporary cash-flow issue.”

The dock went silent.

Tessa turned to him.

“Debt?”

Caleb’s face hardened.

“Lydia.”

“No.”

She stepped forward.

“You do not get to bring another woman on a trip I paid for, tell me to cook for her, threaten me, and then ask me to protect your image.”

The pilot shifted slightly, ready in case Caleb moved again.

Marianne was still on speaker.

Her voice came through clearly.

“Lydia, the operating account is frozen.”

“Your personal trust cards are locked.”

“All resort access codes revoked.”

“Do you want the marina to arrange separate ground transportation?”

Lydia looked at Caleb’s parents.

Then at Tessa.

Then at Caleb.

“Yes.”

“Separate.”

Caleb laughed harshly.

“You’re stranding us?”

“No.”

“I’m returning you to the mainland you came from.”

Tessa looked around in panic.

“Do I have to ride with them?”

Lydia looked at her.

“That sounds like a question for the man who paid for nothing.”

Tessa’s face flushed red.

Robert stood slowly.

“Lydia.”

His voice was quieter than before.

Almost human.

“I am sorry.”

Patricia hissed, “Robert.”

He ignored her.

“I should have said something when he invited Tessa.”

Lydia held his gaze.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

That was all.

An apology too late, but at least named correctly.
