PART 5

Caleb tried to use the marriage next.

That was predictable.

People who disrespect a bond often invoke it when consequences arrive.

“You are my wife.”

Lydia looked at him.

“For now.”

His face went still.

Patricia whispered, “What does that mean?”

Lydia did not answer her.

She opened her phone and called her attorney.

Caleb stepped forward.

“No.”

Lydia put the call on speaker.

A woman’s calm voice answered.

“Lydia?”

“Marianne, begin the separation filing.”

Caleb’s father sat down on a suitcase.

Tessa covered her mouth.

Caleb stared at Lydia like she had suddenly started speaking another language.

Marianne asked, “Today?”

Lydia looked at the ocean.

“Today.”

Caleb laughed in disbelief.

“You’re divorcing me over a vacation?”

Lydia turned back.

“No.”

“I’m divorcing you because this vacation finally made the marriage honest.”

Tessa’s eyes flickered.

Patricia began crying.

Not softly.

Not sincerely.

Performatively.

“Lydia, please.”

“You’re destroying our family.”

Lydia looked at her mother-in-law.

For years, Patricia had used family like a rope.

Family meant forgiving Caleb.

Family meant paying Robert’s medical retreat.

Family meant covering Patricia’s charity table.

Family meant letting Tessa sit too close at dinners because making a scene would be vulgar.

Family had never meant protecting Lydia.

“I didn’t bring Tessa,” Lydia said.

“I didn’t lie about who paid.”

“I didn’t turn my anniversary into a staff assignment.”

Caleb’s voice went low.

“You will regret this.”

The pilot looked up.

Marina staff turned.

Even Robert looked alarmed.

Lydia held Caleb’s gaze.

“No, I think regret is finally changing sides.”

Marianne’s voice came through the phone.

“Lydia, do you want me to also freeze the joint operating account?”

Caleb’s face changed instantly.

There it was.

Fear.

Not at losing her.

At losing access.

Lydia noticed.

So did Tessa.

“Do it,” Lydia said.

Caleb lunged for the phone.

Lydia stepped back.

The pilot moved between them before Caleb could touch her.

Professional.

Neutral.

Unmistakable.

“Sir, please step away from her.”
