part 2

PART 2
The trip had been Lydia’s gift.
Not because Caleb deserved it.
Because she still wanted to believe their marriage could be repaired.
Their fifth anniversary was supposed to be a reset.
That was the word their therapist used.
A reset.
Lydia had booked three nights on a private island resort off the Keys.
One villa.
One chef.
One boat day.
One sunset dinner on the beach.
No phones after seven.
No work calls.
No fighting about money.
No Tessa.
Especially no Tessa.
Tessa had been a ghost in their marriage long before she appeared on the dock.
She was Caleb’s college girlfriend.
Blonde.
Pretty.
Effortlessly helpless in the way some women use like perfume.
When Lydia first met Caleb, Tessa was “ancient history.”
Then she was “just a friend.”
Then she was “going through a hard time.”
Then she was working at Caleb’s marketing firm.
Then she was texting him at midnight about client emergencies that looked suspiciously like selfies.
Every time Lydia asked, Caleb made her feel small.
“You’re insecure.”
“You’re dramatic.”
“You don’t understand professional relationships.”
The worst part was not Tessa’s presence.
It was how Caleb enjoyed Lydia noticing.
He liked being wanted by two women.
He liked one wife paying bills and one ex laughing at his jokes.
He liked Lydia elegant, useful, and quiet.
For the first two years of their marriage, Lydia let him believe she needed him.
That was his favorite mistake.
Lydia came from money, but not lazy money.
Her grandmother had built Harborline Hospitality from three beach motels and a stubborn refusal to marry the wrong man.
When she died, she left Lydia not just cash, but controlling interest in a private travel and resort investment trust.
Caleb knew Lydia had money.
He did not know how much.
He knew she paid for “some things.”
He did not know the island resort was owned through one of her trust subsidiaries.
He certainly did not know the seaplane company, villa staff, concierge contract, and dock access were all billed to Lydia directly.
That was why he stood on the dock looking stunned when the pilot obeyed her, not him.

For once, reality had spoken in the correct name.
