part 3

PART 3
Caleb recovered by getting louder.
He always did.
When charm failed, volume arrived.
“You can’t cancel the trip.”
Lydia stopped near the edge of the dock.
The water below moved softly against the posts.
The sun was bright.
The moment should have been beautiful.
Instead, it became clear.
“I just did.”
Patricia stepped forward, sunglasses in one hand.
“Lydia, don’t be childish.”
Lydia turned slowly.
That word had followed her through five years of marriage.
Childish when she objected.
Emotional when she cried.
Ungrateful when she questioned.
Difficult when she remembered her own name.
She looked at Patricia.
“Your son brought his ex-girlfriend on our anniversary trip.”
Patricia waved one manicured hand.
“Tessa is practically family.”
Lydia looked at Tessa.
“Then take her to your house.”
Tessa’s face flushed.
Caleb stepped between them.
“Do not talk to her like that.”
Lydia laughed once.
It surprised even her.
A short, sharp sound.
“You told me I would be cooking for her fifteen seconds ago.”
His father, Robert, finally spoke.
“Let’s not make a scene in public.”
Lydia looked around.
The dock was private.
The pilot was pretending not to listen.
Two marina staff stood frozen near a fuel cart.
The only public thing here was Caleb’s disrespect.
“I didn’t make the scene.”
“I ended the trip.”
Caleb lowered his voice and moved closer.
That was another version of control.
A private tone meant to remind her of private punishments.
“We will discuss this inside the plane.”
Lydia held up her phone.
“There is no plane.”
He stared at it as if the device had betrayed him.
Then he said the sentence that proved he still did not understand.
“My assistant booked this.”
“No,” Lydia said.
“Your assistant requested it.”
“My office approved it.”
Tessa looked at Caleb.
“Your office?”
Lydia smiled without warmth.
“Yes.”
“The one that paid the deposit, the staff fee, the catering, the fuel, your parents’ luggage transfer, and apparently your girlfriend’s welcome basket.”
Tessa stiffened.
“I’m not his girlfriend.”
Lydia looked at Caleb.
He did not deny it fast enough.
