PART 4
Tessa had not expected humiliation to touch her.
She had expected the island.
The photos.
The villa.
The private chef.
The opportunity to watch Lydia swallow disrespect in expensive surroundings.
Caleb had promised her it would be fine.
He told her Lydia was “used to family trips.”
He said his parents wanted her there.
He said the marriage was basically over.
He said the island was his.
Tessa believed him because believing Caleb had always been her favorite bad habit.
Now she stood on a dock with no flight, no villa, no chef, and no story that made her look graceful.
“Caleb,” she said quietly.
“You said you paid for this.”
Caleb’s jaw tightened.
“Not now.”
Lydia watched the exchange with a strange calm.
A calm so cold it almost felt merciful.
For months, she had imagined confronting them.
Screaming.
Crying.
Asking why.
But standing there with the ocean behind her, Lydia realized why was the wrong question.
Why gave Caleb too much importance.
The right question was what now.
Patricia touched Caleb’s arm.
“Fix this.”
He looked at Lydia.
“Rebook it.”
“No.”
“Lydia.”
“No.”
Robert cleared his throat.
“We have all traveled a long way.”
“You traveled forty minutes from Miami.”
Patricia glared at her.
“That is not the point.”
Lydia looked at the luggage.
Then at Tessa’s designer straw hat sticking out of a monogrammed suitcase.
“No, the point is that everyone packed for a trip I planned for my marriage.”
“And no one thought to ask whether I had agreed to bring my husband’s ex-girlfriend.”
Caleb’s face darkened.
“You are embarrassing me.”
Lydia stepped closer.
Her voice lowered.
“Good.”
The word stunned him.
It stunned her too.
But it was true.
He had embarrassed her at dinners.
At board events.
In front of friends.
In front of waiters.
In text messages she was not supposed to see.
Now embarrassment had finally returned to its owner.
The pilot approached carefully.
“Ma’am, would you like us to unload the aircraft catering?”
Lydia did not look away from Caleb.
“No.”
“Donate it to the marina staff.”
The pilot nodded.
“Yes, ma’am.”
Patricia gasped.
“That food was ours.”
Lydia looked at her.
May you like
“So was the trip.”
