PART 6

The joint operating account was not supposed to be dangerous.

That was what Lydia once believed.

It was for household expenses.

Travel.

Gifts.

Emergency repairs.

Family events.

Caleb used it like a costume closet.

He paid for flowers Lydia never received.

Hotel rooms he called client meetings.

Jewelry he said was for his mother.

Dinners he claimed were business development.

When Lydia first saw the charges, she wanted to ask gently.

Then she saw Tessa’s name in a concierge note.

Thank you, Mr. Ward.

Ms. Lane’s spa appointment has been confirmed.

Tessa Lane.

The ex-girlfriend.

The “friend.”

The “professional relationship.”

Lydia hired Marianne that week.

Not to file divorce immediately.

To understand the shape of the betrayal.

The financial review was brutal.

Caleb had not only used marital funds.

He had used Lydia’s trust-linked credit privileges to upgrade flights, secure private rooms, and impress Tessa with a lifestyle he did not own.

He had borrowed against Lydia’s name socially.

Not legally.

Just enough to keep the illusion alive.

Now, on the dock, that illusion collapsed with every call Marianne made.

Caleb’s phone began buzzing.

First his bank.

Then his assistant.

Then the card services team.

Then, judging by the way Tessa’s face changed, Tessa’s hotel reservation.

Tessa pulled out her phone.

“My room was canceled.”

Lydia looked at Caleb.

“You booked her a room on my account?”

Caleb’s mouth tightened.

“It was part of the group reservation.”

Patricia jumped in.

“We all had rooms.”

“No,” Lydia said.

“You had a family villa.”

“Tessa had a honeymoon bungalow.”

The words landed with surgical precision.

Robert muttered, “Caleb.”

Tessa stared at him.

“You said it was for overflow.”

Lydia almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Then she remembered Tessa smiling when Caleb said Lydia would cook.

Complicity looks different when its invoice arrives.

Caleb tried one more lie.

“That was the resort’s mistake.”

Lydia held up her phone.

“The resort sent me the notes.”

Her voice stayed calm.

“Honeymoon bungalow.”

“Champagne.”

“Red roses.”

“Private dinner for two under Caleb Ward.”

She paused.

“On the night of my anniversary.”

Tessa stepped away from him.

Patricia sat on a suitcase, stunned silent.

Robert looked sick.

Caleb had no answer.
