PART 3

Julian owed eight hundred thousand dollars.

That was the number he finally admitted.

Not at first.

At first, he said fifty thousand.

Then two hundred.

Then “a little more.”

Richard slapped the dining table so hard the silverware jumped.

“Say the full amount.”

Julian whispered it.

Eight hundred thousand.

Amelia felt the room tilt.

Her surgery deposit was six hundred thousand.

The rest of the trust would cover recovery, home care, and months of rehabilitation.

Julian looked at her like a drowning man watching someone else hold a life jacket.

“I was going to win it back.”

Amelia stared at him.

“That is what you said last time.”

Richard turned sharply.

“This is not the time for judgment.”

“No.”

Amelia’s voice was quiet.

“It is the time for consequences.”

Julian’s face twisted.

“I could be killed.”

Amelia touched the medical folder.

“I could be paralyzed.”

Richard looked at her with disgust.

“Always dramatic.”

That word had followed her through every doctor visit.

Dramatic.

When she fainted.

Dramatic.

When pain made her vomit.

Dramatic.

When she asked for help carrying groceries.

Dramatic.

When she said she was afraid of dying.

Amelia looked at her father.

“Mother made that trust for me.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“Your mother made many emotional decisions.”

“She made one legal decision.”

That was the first time she saw him truly angry.

Not loud angry.

Dangerous angry.

He leaned forward.

“Your brother’s life is on the line.”

“So is mine.”

“You have doctors.”

“He has men outside who do not care about doctors.”

Amelia stood slowly.

“Then call the police.”

Julian panicked.

“No.”

Richard’s hand closed around his glass.

“We do not bring police into this family.”

Amelia almost laughed.

This family.

The sacred phrase used whenever someone needed her silence.

This family had covered Julian’s drunk driving.

This family had paid off a former employee after Richard fired her for rejecting him.

This family had buried every ugly thing under money and manners.

Amelia picked up the folder.

“I’m leaving tomorrow for Boston.”

Richard stood.

“You are not going anywhere until you sign a temporary release.”

She turned toward the hallway.

He grabbed her wrist.

Pain shot up her arm.

For the first time, Amelia understood he might not stop at words.

That night, she packed her medical bag and hid her phone on auto-record.
