PART 5

Richard did not start with violence.

He started with family.

That was how he always dressed cruelty before taking it outside.

He stood in the bright hallway with his sleeves rolled up and said, “We are all under pressure.”

Amelia held the medical bag in one hand.

Her phone stayed hidden in her robe pocket.

The open call continued silently.

Julian stood behind Richard with a drink he had not touched.

His black-and-gold shirt looked ridiculous in the morning light.

He looked like a spoiled child pretending not to hear a fire alarm.

Richard placed a document on the console table.

“Temporary release.”

Amelia looked at it.

The header alone made her stomach turn.

Authorization for Medical Trust Withdrawal.

Amount.

Six hundred thousand dollars.

Purpose.

Family emergency.

Her surgery deposit.

Her survival.

Reduced to a line item for Julian.

“No.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“Sign it.”

“No.”

Julian stepped forward.

“Em, please.”

She turned on him.

“Do not call me that.”

He flinched.

That nickname belonged to childhood.

Before he learned she could always be traded for his comfort.

Richard’s voice dropped.

“You are being selfish.”

“I am trying to stay alive.”

“Your brother is trying not to be murdered.”

“Then he should tell the police who he owes.”

Julian went pale.

Richard slammed his hand against the wall.

“We are not calling the police.”

Amelia’s phone warmed in her pocket.

Someone was listening.

She had to keep him talking.

“Why?”

Richard’s eyes flashed.

“Because your brother’s mistake does not need to destroy this family.”

Amelia swallowed.

“My death would not destroy it?”

“That is not what I said.”

“That is exactly what you said.”

Julian whispered, “Dad…”

Richard moved suddenly.

He grabbed Amelia’s bag.

She pulled back.

The envelope tore halfway out.

He saw the hospital receipt.

His face twisted.

“You already paid them?”

“The deposit is due today.”

He shoved her into the wall.

Her head struck the framed art behind her.

Julian jumped but still did not help.

Richard’s hand closed around her throat.

That was when he shouted the sentence the phone recorded perfectly.

“Your brother needs that money more than you need to stay alive!”

Outside, police cars turned through the gate.

Inside, Amelia forced one hand into her pocket and touched the phone screen.
