part 9

PART 9
Julian cried in the hospital room.
Amelia watched him without moving.
Once, his tears would have pulled her out of her own pain.
She would have comforted him.
Explained for him.
Cleaned the broken glass.
Called the lawyer.
Made the excuse.
Not anymore.
“I didn’t think Dad would really hurt you,” Julian whispered.
Amelia’s voice was rough.
“He already was.”
Julian wiped his face.
“I mean like that.”
She looked at the bruise forming near her collarbone.
“Violence does not begin when witnesses arrive.”
He flinched.
The detective near the door said nothing.
Julian took a shaky breath.
“I owe them money.”
“I know.”
“I thought if I didn’t pay, they would kill me.”
“And you were willing to let me die slowly instead.”
His face crumpled.
“No.”
Amelia held his gaze.
“Yes.”
That word did more than shouting could.
Julian sat down hard in the chair.
“I was scared.”
“So was I.”
“You had doctors.”
“You had a father choking you in a hallway.”
Julian covered his face.
Amelia looked at him for a long time.
This was her brother.
The boy who once cried when she left for college.
The boy who stole her birthday candles because he liked blowing them out.
The man who stood holding a drink while their father’s hand closed around her throat.
Both were true.
That was the cruelty of family.
“You need to tell the police everything,” she said.
He lowered his hands.
“If I do, Dad goes down.”
Amelia’s eyes hardened.
“Dad put himself there.”
“The company could collapse.”
“The company is not alive.”
Julian looked at her.
She touched the hospital bracelet on her wrist.
“I am.”
He nodded slowly.
Maybe because he understood.
Maybe because he had run out of choices.
That evening, Julian gave a full statement.
He named the lenders.
The fake invoices.
The company accounts.
The family lawyer who helped Richard draft the medical trust release.
The private dinner where Richard said Amelia’s surgery was “a bad investment.”
When Claire told Amelia that last part, something inside her went quiet.
Not numb.
Finished.
The next morning, Amelia was transferred to Boston under medical escort.
Before she left, Detective Alvarez handed her a copy of the recording.
“For court,” he said.
Amelia held it carefully.
