PART 4
Amelia did not sleep that night.
Pain kept her awake.
Fear kept her sharper.
At 2:13 a.m., she opened the locked drawer beneath her desk and removed the documents her mother’s lawyer had sent years earlier.
Medical Trust Agreement.
Beneficiary Protection Clause.
Emergency Contact Instructions.
If the trustee or family representative attempts coercion, intimidation, or unauthorized transfer, contact the named trust attorney immediately.
Amelia read that line three times.
Her mother had known.
Maybe not this exact night.
Maybe not Julian’s debt.
Maybe not Richard’s hand around her throat.
But she had known enough.
The trust attorney’s name was Claire Morrison.
Amelia called her at dawn.
Her voice shook when she explained.
Claire did not sound surprised.
That frightened Amelia more than shock would have.
“Do you feel safe in the house?”
Amelia looked at her bedroom door.
“No.”
“Can you leave now?”
“My father took my car keys.”
A pause.
“Is your phone charged?”
“Yes.”
“Turn on recording.”
“It is already on.”
“Good.”
Claire’s tone changed.
“Amelia, I need you to listen carefully.”
“If they attempt to force a signature, you say out loud that you refuse.”
“If they threaten you, keep the phone visible or on your body.”
“If you are in immediate danger, press emergency call.”
Amelia’s throat tightened.
“What if I don’t get time?”
Claire was quiet for one second.
Then she said, “Your mother added one more protection.”
Amelia froze.
“What?”
“The medical trust has a distress protocol.”
“If you call me and say the phrase she chose, my office automatically notifies police, freezes the account, and alerts the hospital.”
Amelia sat down on the edge of the bed.
“What phrase?”
Claire read it softly.
“Choose Amelia.”
The words hit like a ghost touching her face.
Her mother’s voice.
Her mother’s last fight.
Her mother’s final instruction.
Choose Amelia.
Downstairs, Richard shouted her name.
Julian was already pacing in the foyer.
The men from the black car were gone, but the threat they carried had entered the house.
Amelia put the phone in her robe pocket.
Then she called Claire again and left the line open.
When her father demanded the money, Amelia said the phrase.
Quietly.
Clearly.
“Choose Amelia.”

Then she walked into the hallway.
