PART 8

The men threatening Julian were not just gamblers.

They were tied to a private lending ring.

That was what Detective Alvarez explained the next morning.

High-interest loans.

Illegal collection tactics.

Money routed through luxury businesses.

One of those businesses had a connection to Hart Development, Richard’s company.

Amelia sat upright in the hospital bed while Claire and Dr. Keller argued quietly about whether she should be resting.

She listened anyway.

Richard had not only tried to steal from the medical trust.

He had been using company accounts to cover Julian’s losses for years.

When the debts grew too large, he looked for money that would not alert investors.

Amelia’s surgery fund.

Her mother’s last protection.

That was the easiest thing in the house to call selfish.

Detective Alvarez placed a printed transcript on the table.

Richard’s recorded sentence sat in black ink.

Your brother needs that money more than you need to stay alive.

Amelia stared at it.

The words looked uglier on paper.

Less like rage.

More like policy.

“Will he be charged?”

The detective nodded.

“Assault.”

“Coercion.”

“Attempted financial exploitation.”

“Potential trust fraud.”

“Obstruction depending on what we find in the company records.”

Amelia’s fingers curled around the blanket.

“What about Julian?”

“He is cooperating enough to be afraid.”

That sounded exactly like Julian.

Not moral.

Afraid.

Claire opened another folder.

“There is also a civil matter.”

Amelia looked at her.

“The medical trust can petition to remove Richard permanently from any indirect influence over your care, finances, or access.”

“Do it.”

Claire nodded.

“I already filed.”

For the first time, Amelia smiled faintly.

The smile hurt her throat.

Still worth it.

Later that afternoon, Julian asked to see her.

Amelia almost said no.

Then she thought of the courtroom ahead.

The surgery ahead.

The family story everyone would try to rewrite.

She agreed with Detective Alvarez present.

Julian entered the room looking smaller than he ever had.

No drink.

No gold shirt.

No smugness.

Just fear and shame wearing designer shoes.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Amelia looked at him.

“For which part?”

His mouth opened.

No answer came.

That was the problem.
