PART 7
Julian tried to cry before the handcuffs reached Richard.
That was his old strategy.
Not a full breakdown.
Just enough tears to make someone else feel responsible.
“Amelia, tell them Dad didn’t mean it.”
She stared at him.
Her throat burned.
Her spine throbbed.
Her surgery envelope was bent in her lap.
“You heard him.”
Julian’s eyes darted toward the detective.
“He was scared.”
“So was I.”
“He’s our father.”
“He put his hand on my throat.”
Julian lowered his voice.
“If they take him, those men will come back.”
Detective Alvarez turned.
“What men?”
Julian froze.
Amelia slowly looked at him.
The silence became dangerous.
The detective stepped closer.
“What men, Mr. Hart?”
Richard shouted from the hallway where officers held him.
“Julian, shut up.”
Too late.
Julian’s face collapsed.
The spoiled son had finally realized his fear had opened a door.
Detective Alvarez nodded to another officer.
“Separate them.”
Julian panicked.
“I need a lawyer.”
“You can have one.”
“But first, you are going to stop talking to her.”
As the officers moved Julian toward the sitting room, Amelia saw his drink still lying spilled on the floor.
A golden liquid spreading across polished marble.
It looked like every year of his life.
Wasted.
Expensive.
Someone else expected to clean it.
Paramedics arrived next.
Amelia tried to stand.
Her legs buckled.
The medic caught her.
Richard saw and shouted, “She’s exaggerating.”
Nobody listened.
That was new.
Nobody listened to him.
At the hospital, doctors documented the bruising on Amelia’s throat and the flare of nerve pain caused by the impact against the wall.
Her surgeon in Boston spoke to Dr. Keller by phone.
The operation could still happen if she was transferred safely within forty-eight hours.
The deposit remained protected.
The trust remained locked.
Richard remained in custody.
Julian remained under questioning.
And Amelia lay in a hospital bed with an oxygen monitor on her finger, staring at the ceiling as if the ceiling might finally stay still.
Claire Morrison arrived at midnight with a folder and red eyes.
“Your mother would be proud of you.”
Amelia turned her face away.
“No.”
“She would be angry it had to be me.”
Claire’s voice softened.
“She was angry before she died.”
May you like
“That is why she prepared.”
