PART 6

The police arrived because Claire Morrison did exactly what Amelia’s mother had instructed.

She did not call Richard.

She did not warn the family.

She did not ask for clarification while a sick woman was trapped in a house with people trying to steal her surgery money.

She called 911.

Then the bank.

Then the hospital.

Then the trust oversight judge assigned to emergency medical protections.

By the time Richard released Amelia, every account connected to the medical trust was frozen against unauthorized withdrawal.

By the time Julian saw the police lights, the hospital had been told to expect Amelia under protective intake.

By the time Detective Alvarez entered the foyer, Richard Hart had already been recorded threatening his daughter’s life.

“Step away from her now!”

Richard stumbled back.

His face changed instantly.

Anger became confusion.

Confusion became performance.

“Officer, this is a misunderstanding.”

Amelia slid down the wall, gasping.

Detective Alvarez looked at her throat.

Then at the torn document on the floor.

Then at the envelope clutched in her shaking hand.

“This does not look like a misunderstanding.”

Julian stepped backward.

One officer looked at him.

“Sir, stay where you are.”

Julian lifted both hands.

“I didn’t do anything.”

Amelia looked at him from the floor.

That was the truth and the crime of him.

He had done nothing.

He had watched.

Richard tried again.

“My daughter is ill.”

“She gets confused.”

Amelia laughed once.

It came out broken and painful.

Detective Alvarez crouched near her.

“Ma’am, are you Amelia Hart?”

She nodded.

“Is your phone still recording?”

Amelia lifted it.

“Yes.”

Richard’s face went pale.

The detective took the phone carefully.

Amelia’s voice was hoarse.

“My trust attorney is on the line.”

From the speaker, Claire Morrison’s voice came through.

“I am here.”

“And I can confirm the medical trust distress protocol was activated before physical contact occurred.”

Richard stared at the phone like it had betrayed the bloodline.

Detective Alvarez stood.

“Richard Hart, turn around.”

Richard shouted, “You cannot arrest me in my own house.”

The detective’s eyes were cold.

May you like

“I can when you assault your daughter in it.”
