Chapter 1

He Chose His Mistress’s Daughter While His Own Son Seized.

Claire Whitmore hit the emergency department doors with her five-year-old son limp against her chest.

Her hair was soaked with rain.

Her gray cardigan clung to her arms.

Noah’s flushed face rested beneath a gray hospital blanket, his small body frighteningly still after minutes of shaking in her arms.

Behind her, nurses rushed a gurney through the bright fluorescent entrance.

On it lay Lily Reed, six years old, pink shirt wrinkled, oxygen mask fogging softly as medical staff surrounded her.

Daniel Whitmore stumbled in behind the gurney.

His face was pale.

His hands were shaking.

But his first step was toward Noah only after Lily was already surrounded by nurses.

Claire saw him reach.

She recoiled so hard her back struck the wall.

“You carried her past him while our son was seizing!”

Daniel froze.

His extended hand trembled in the air between them.

“Lily couldn’t breathe—please, let me take Noah.”

Claire turned her shoulder, protecting Noah with the last strength in her body.

“No.”

Dr. Elena Marsh moved between them, navy scrubs sharp under the clinical light.

A nurse reached carefully for Noah, checking his breathing.

Dr. Marsh looked Daniel directly in the eyes.

“Neither could Noah.”

Daniel’s face lost all color.

For the first time, he seemed to see his son clearly.

Not as noise.

Not as an interruption.

Not as Claire’s panic.

As a child who had needed him.

Claire’s arms tightened once more around Noah before she allowed the nurse to take him.

Her hands resisted even as her mind understood he needed the medical team more than he needed her grip.

Noah was placed onto the gurney.

The treatment doors opened.

Claire followed until Dr. Marsh stopped Daniel at the entrance.

Claire’s voice broke.

“He was burning in my arms, and you chose her.”

Daniel stopped moving.

Dr. Marsh planted herself in front of the doors.

“You came too late.”

The glass doors began closing.

Daniel saw his own devastated reflection.

Claire collapsed against the wall, watching Noah disappear into treatment.

And no one in that hallway could pretend Daniel’s choice had not arrived before the ambulance did.
